Love the attitude and I did the same thing, and have basically traveled the world over, and now living in Cartagena, Colombia, South America, as well as in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

I found the whole, "happy being an Ac repairman for the rest of their lives," to be quite elitist and ignorant.

this post was fine, maybe a little naive about how "easy" it is to find decent, trustworthy people to hang with and how spotting scumbags is easy.

This maybe true in Omaha, Nebraska, where most people don't consider occasional heavy drinking, drug use, gambling, normal.

so activities which "reasonable" people might consider "red flags", aren't really red flags here.

if you want to have fun in your 20's this is one of the best places to do that. But don't kid yourself into thinking we have "better," "more successful" people here than Austin, TX for instance.

this is a great place to have a good time, it's no place to connect with human beings.

For sure. A decent player can clear $20-30/hr at 2-5. With no real risk of ruin. I think the largest downswing I've had was like 5 or 6k, in like 4 or 5k hours, sometimes buying in for 1k/200bb if the game is good.

good poker and low cost of living makes Vegas an exceptional place to grind.

c'mon dude. This town reeks of desperation.

these people you speak of that move here to become "successful", whatever the fck that means, in this town, usually wind up working some absurd "promoter" job until they realize they aren't going to make any money.

even the people who are really good looking and personable, thus enabling them to make some money will usually develop a gambling, drinking or drug addiction. sometimes all three.

and ya, there are a bunch of fun things to do here but some busto working as a bar back can't afford many of them.

im glad you're happy here. I'm happier here than I would be elsewhere, just because of the gambling opportunities that allow me to tell "the man" to blow me, cost of living, entertainment, anonymity.

this town has a mega dark side that you don't really acknowledge.

who are all these wildly successful people you've met and what do they do?

It kind of sounds like your talking about the whole nightlife crowd, who are clearly the lamest people in all of Las Vegas. I'd rather go to a dive bar downtown and drink canned PBR with the hipsters then spending one fcking moment around those insufferable douche bags.
I think you and I agree more than we disagree, we just see different people day in and day out.

    - Hate HATE nightclub people. I came here and worked as a waiter in high end restaurants. You can make a nice living doing that. Waiting tables back home in the midwest, I was usually working with wives of husbands who were the real breadwinners, or a bunch of clowns just working for weed money. Everyone I worked with in Vegas had aspirations of doing more, whether it was within the industry, starting their own business, sportsbetting/poker, whatever it was. It was really invigorating to be around people like that. The ones that have I guess "made it" so far are casino execs now, restaurant operators in other cities, business owners, the lead design guy for Fox 5 (has an interview with Pixar next week), a girl who sells Advocare products for a living and got to quit her job, and one girl who's high up on the Zappos ladder. They're not millionaires or anything, but they've definitely upgraded and are doing some great things now, often without a boss. None of the gamblers made it to my knowledge, but I haven't seen them in awhile so I'm not sure.

    - That barback is probably trying to use that experience to become a bartender somewhere, and those guys can make bank. I know one of the bartenders at the crappy friggin Loose Caboose, and he clears $300-500 most nights -- sometimes more if somebody hits a Royal.

    - I saw a lot of the vapid, shitty degens and club promoter types, especially when I first came here in 2006 (the whole Ed Hardy crowd). I'm fully aware of them today, and I know the places I can usually find them -- so I just avoid those places. If I was in those places all the time, I'm sure my outlook on people here as a whole would end up being pretty bleak. I like hanging out downtown with the hipsters too, because most of them aren't the walking punchlines people make them out to be. We usually have the same music tastes too, so that helps.

    - There's the club retards, the animals you see at the sportsbooks, the druggies, the people in Hender-tucky, and the people I've worked with who just turned out to be their own worst enemy in the one town where it will hurt you the most. Maybe your gambling lifestyle forces you to be around a lot of them and makes you feel the whole town is like that, but I promise you it's better than you think as a whole. I remember the first time I went to Rock-n-Roll Wine at the M pool. 1000 girls in sundresses, and almost none of that shitty element anywhere to be seen. Went to a hotel party after and met some of the friends I still have now.

It can be great here. Hate the heat in the summer, love everything else. It might not be easy, but try to change your surroundings over time. You owe it to yourself.

Oh, and the whole bit about the A/C repair guy. The one I know here makes decent money, not quite what your guy in Phoenix makes, but it's pretty good and he likes the job. Difference is, he knows that profession is limited in terms of salary and opportunity. Some people are okay with making decent money at a job they don't hate and just do that their whole life. Some people look beyond that because they know they have the ability to do more.

I couldn't imagine being old, looking back on my young life, and having not even tried to live out my full potential and chase my dreams. If I failed, fine, but at least I fukking tried.

I'm retiring from the Air Force 01FEB15. They'll pay me $3800/month to read books in NYC, but I can make more in Las Vegas($1500/month with a roomie paying $750) because Las Vegas is cheaper. The Post 9/11 GI Bill actually pays veterans' rent for 3 years after they get out the military if they go to school (Casino Management UNLV). LOL! What do you say, MoneyM1ke?!?

Naw. I've been looking at condos in NYC. I can swing Vegas, but need a roommate. Or I could work full time and go to school full time...
