I use Italian only because that's what I find on the store shelves over here. Don't remember seeing Spanish.

I mostly use it to make pizza dough. I use vegetable oil for frying stuff.

Where do you get the Spanish olive oils, Whole Foods or a smaller specialty shop? Considering how incredible Spanish Iberico pigs are and their Rioja wines, I would definitely give it a try. The best restaurant in the world according to many is also in Spain, El Bulli. Wonder what kind of olive oil they use?

Spain produces nearly half of the olive oil in the world, it shouldn't be hard to find.

    I personally prefer Greek.

A lot like wine, anyone who tries to reduce the complexity of the varietals and styles to one country being superior is totally missing the boat.

We use both in our household, and I prefer the SPANISH variety better.

Three things one should pay attention to when purchasing their olive oils.........

    1. Glass bottles only

    2. Cold pressed

    3. Organic

We buy our olive oils at Trader Joe's, excellent variety, good value, and many fit the 3 criteria listed above.

Asking this question is like saying 'Swedish women or Brazilian women?'

In both you will find some amazing and others less appealing.....and all of our palates are looking for different things.

Buy in two gallons farm pressed cold stone olive oil from Greece every year through a small importer.

Was treated to some Cobram Estate from Australia over the holidays and it was quite good. Extremely fragrant and good on seafood

I like em all. I have two California OOs right now. One for cooking, and the McEvoy Ranch for finishing. The last one was probably a waste of good money because I always forget to use it. Having it on the counter at least makes me look like I know what I''m doing.

I've found Spanish OO to be usually thinner and not as good for cooking, but the flavors come out more and I like it better for dipping bread in.

Italia and it's not even close.

The world’s best olive oils were unveiled at a press conference just minutes ago at the International Culinary Center when event organizer and Olive Oil Times publisher Curtis Cord, Steve Jenkins of Fairway Market, the founder and CEO of the International Culinary Center, Dorothy Hamilton, and the chief judge of the competition, Gino Celletti, summarized before a packed room of media representatives from around the world, the winners of the 2013 New York International Olive Oil Competition.

The competition saw 702 extra virgin olive oil entries, 653 of which made it here from 22 countries in time for the judging. A grand total of 20 countries have taken home 260 awards from Best of Class, to Gold and Silver. The countries taking home the most overall awards were Italy, with 83 awards, Spain, with 51 awards, and the United States, with 36 awards.

Italy won big with eight Best of Class Awards and an astounding 51 Gold Awards.

What dont you understand about the fact that there's more than one competition?
from the site you gave "Spain finished second only to Italy, the country with the most entries in the competition."

I was thinking that too. If Spain entered 80 oils and took home 51 awards, while Italy entered 400 and took home 83 awards, that's a whole other story. Italy could have dominated in that regard too for all we know, but it would be nice to see the full #s.

The competition wasn't based on number of entries idiot, it was based on quality. Another SBR genius who can't read.

    Italy #1. Like always.

It was judged on quality not quantity.

You are missing the point. I dont have the time to make you understand as it will take too long.
Here is a list where they combine various competitions and rank the oils, Spain dominates.
But that isnt the point anymore - the point is that you are really stupid.

I'm not missing any point. You are.

    I just realized something here.

    Arrogance.

Instead of admitting you are wrong, you continue to argue despite the facts.

Your ego won't let you admit you are wrong. You would rather pointlessly argue despite all facts of the matter.

Italy has the better olive oil. It's not even close. There is no argument.

Italian olive oil is the best in the world by a HUGE margin.

But go on continuing with your pointless points. Let your ego continue to get the better of you.

BTW your list is 2 years old. 2012. Also, the New York competition is the best and biggest in the world. I don't even know what competition that list is from.

Nothing to do with ego at all, I can just tell you are stupid. Its an observation. The same way I observe posters Ralphie/Rocket/Magicdice (among others,)are smart people.

The biggest and best and MOST RECENT is the New York competition.

Quality of the oil is the most important factor there not quantity.

Italy is king of olive oil. It's not even an argument.

Italy had 8 BEST OF CLASS!

Italy had as many GOLD AWARDS (51) as Spain had TOTAL AWARDS also at 51.

Italy's quality is off the charts excellent.
