I'm scheduled to go under the knife this week and I'm not sure what to expect for the recovery. The doc is all like just take it easy. I do like his confidence in how routine he seems to be making this out to be. A google search just returns all the people who have had anything go wrong with the hernia surgery, and I'm just curious what the average recovery is like? Any advice?

You shouldn't ask until you have had the surgery already lol.

I've had 2 hernia surgeries. One was 12 years ago; they just reattached the tendon (no screen); I had to wheelchair the whole way to the car, it hurt really bad and I was pretty miserable for about 4 days after.

I had the 2nd surgery about a year and half ago (I actually had a double hernia). This time because I was older and the facility was better they put in a mesh screen. I walked out of the ER to the car, got in the car by myself fine. Granted it was sore for a couple days but much better than the 1st time.

So in conclusion, if given a choice, get the screen installed.

The pain is fine. I wouldn't even classify it as pain. It's more like my abs are really sore - like I just did a ton of situps.

Don't get it infected...thats a nasty procedure
usually performed w/no painkiller...I got infected
by swiming in my condo pool ...makes me a SF!!!!
