An Oakland neighborhood is left in shock and disbelief after an 8-year-old girl was killed and two young children were injured when an apartment was left riddled with bullets Wednesday night.
Alaysha Carradine, 8, was the only one out of the three children present in the apartment that sustained fatal bullets and was pronounced dead before she reached the hospital. Her two friends, Amara York and her four year old brother ended up in the hospital.
A gunman rushed into the house and opened fire at about 11:15 PM Wednesday authorities say.
Amara York’s 63-year-old grandmother was also shot in the leg, but the wound was not life threatening.
Twenty-two year old Khamel Hardin was upstairs when the attack occurred and went unharmed. There were other victims, but their names have not been released yet to the public.
Carradine was sleeping over at the York’s house while her mother was out of town in Washington, D.C.
Hardin describes the frightful gunshots coming from the level below him.
“It was like it was a bomb, an explosion, just going off so quick,” Hardin explained to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The attack started when Amara York ran to answer the doorbell, assuming that it was her mother arriving home. Instead, she was bombarded by a hail of bullets but miraculously survived the attack.
Bullets shattered both the security door and the wooden door behind it, as well as the walls of the apartment and a back window. Blood could be seen on the carpet on the inside of the apartment.

Jesse Fowler, a resident of Oakland, had this to say to reporters:
“I just want to know why you would shoot up a houseful of kids. Where do you get the satisfaction in that?” Fowler asked.
“I know the kids didn’t do anything to deserve this,” Sharon Smith, who was watching Carradine and let her stay over York’s house told multiple local reporters. She added also that the tragedy was just ‘heartbreaking’.
NBC Bay Area reports that Jesse Fowler has word of how Alaysha’s mother is taking the news.
“She’s not doing too good, she doesn’t want to accept it,” says Jesse sympathetically.
Officials have not named any suspects, but have announced a $25,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest.
Set to join the third grade in a few months, Carradine loved school, reading and modeling, according to reports. She was planning to go to a modeling competition with York Thursday afternoon.
