On Plenty Of Fish, I have a routine.
I read through their profile, check to see if they have their name listed, and make sure to mention a few things they say they like in their profile.
For example, if a girl has her name listed as Sarah and she likes running, walking her dog, and going to Reds games, I make sure to mention all of those.
I always start off with "Hi Sarah, I'm Eric!". If they don't have their name listed I just say 'Hi, I'm Eric!". I use a ton of ! points. It's just by habit, but usually I tend to get a lot of responses.
Most girls on POF are used to "Hey cutie" and stuff like that. Gotta differentiate yourself. Even if you don't care about anything they're interested in (which I don't), you've gotta act like it.
Oh, and never say words like hope or maybe... like Maybe we can hang sometime or I hope to hear from you. Doesn't exude confidence. You need to act like you've already got the girl in the bag, but don't seem like a cocky douche.
Let me link you to a profile of a girl I've messaged and copy you on the message.

Hey, I'm Eric!
I'm pretty big into going to the gym, running, playing sports, and trying to stay fit.
What part of Cincy are you from?
You're a hair stylist?
I speak some spanish, but no French. Are you fluent?
Some things about me that I feel are worth mentioning are:
1. I live in the Amelia/Anderson area.
2. I have an 11 month old puppy (lab mixed w/ beagle, terrier, basset)
3. I go to the gym 5-6 days a week.
4. I have a career. I work from home for a computer (telecommunications company) on our pricing desk.
If there's anything else you want to know about me, let me know. I feel like i'm a catch! Talk to you soon!
