It's not a branch, no. There's definitely a lot of math involved though. Have to take calc 1 and 2 freshman year of undergrad and that's pretty much it for "math" courses. Linear algebra is recommended but not required at most schools that offer the major. After that it's lower level stats and then math stats (upper level as far as undergrad is concerned). Most the actuarial exams are fine to just use the study manual for. You definitely will be lost without calculus but you don't really need algebra at all, if I had to guess. I'm perfectly fine w/ algebra...took all the courses when I was supposed to. But if someone was to not have algebra knowledge I'd think they could still get through calc just fine, and subsequently actuarial exams too.

yeah, there is a reason every single college in the nation requires students to master algebra before they allow them to take calculus. College algebra and precalc are both supposed to be mastered prior to taking MAC2311 or the easier calc classes.
