Solve math wuestion for 50 points
| 3x + 4| = | X -7|
Ive been helping my cousin with his algebra( its online no book) and i completely forgot the form to solving these. i looked at a few examples but cant figure out how book got its answer. Can you please solve this equation and show steps. The books says answer is -13/54 and -7/54 and i get a different answer.
That's a difficult "wuestion".
I can't even make a wuess as to what the wanswer to this wuestion may be.

3x = X - 11
2x = -11
x = -11/2 aka -5.5
i'm horrible at math and the bracket things throw me

answer is -5.5.
-12.5 = -12.5
absolute value makes it 12.5= 12.5
equation is quite simple
3x+4 = 1x-7
2x+4= -7
2x = -7-4
2x = -11
x= -11/2 = -5.5
if you fill in -5.5 in the equation it comes out to -12.5 = -12.5
I got 11/2 i guess i should of just ignored books answer.
Remove the absolute value bars and apply the distributive property
book is wrong completely . if you fill in x with the book's variables you dont get the equation equal.

The two answers are -5.5 and .75. The values the books give aren't correct, plug them in and it doesn't work. The people who only got -5.5 just ignored the absolute value which you obviously can't do.
That is correct, with absolute value on both sides of the equation you will need so solve the 4 variation of this probelm, with all the variations of the sides being positive or negative; and solve the equations as normal
(3x+4)=(x+7); x=-5.5
-(3x+4)=(x+7); x= 3/4
(3x+4)=-(x+7); x= 3/4
-(3x+4)=-(x+7); x= -5.5
|3x+4|=|x-7|
3x+4=-(x-7)
3x+4=-x+7
4x=3
x=3/4
or
3x+4=x-7
2x+4=-7
2x=-11
x=-11/2

yes you must negate the equations (cuz its absolute value) so 3/4 is another correct answer. i apologize

3x + 4= x-7 or 3x+4= -x+7
Welcome. You'd also have to try -3x-4=x-7, but in this scenario that also comes out to 3/4. With absolute values on both sides, there are more than 2 possible solutions.
I feel like a real dumbass cause i got -11/2 and 3/4 before i even posted this Q on here but when i plugged it in it came out wrong cause i plugged -5.5 on the left side equation and 3/4 on the right side thinking that was how you checked it. Thats why i thought book may be right. Anyways thanks a lot guys. Havent done math in 7 years. Glad im not back in school.
