What happens when you run out gas?

I have a friend who ran out of gas today while driving. He filled it up and everything is back to normal. I am wondering though are there any long term damages to the car when you let it run out of gas?

    Thanks...

Gasoline lubricates the internal pump and the myth is that you may suck up some debris from the bottom of the tank, but the netting should catch it. The pump pulls fuel from the bottom anyways.

Happens once or twice then obviously no. No idea of long term damage if he lets it happen a couple times a week, other than the pain in ass of finding gas, leaving car on side of road and utter embarassment when you know every chick that drives by you on the side of the road thinks your a dumbass for running out of gas.
