Had never considered that last point. Food for thought.

The guy never misses the stoop either, flings it from his car, always on the stoop, like the basketball player who hits 98 percent of his free throws.

So, I'm thinking, what? 25 dollars in an envelope? Too little? More?

The guy has been rock solid all year, bad weather and all.
Steve Very stand up thing to do pal. When I was in college I helped pay for it by delivering papers at night. I had 2 routes, I earned about 2k a month doing it. The thing people don't factor in is it's a 8 hour, 7 day a week job. I averaged $600 a month in gas (back when prices were sane) 350 miles a day in travel and about 300 a month in maintenance or tires during monsoon season.

You kill yourself and your car. Most newspaper outfits pay 10-23 cents a paper and charge you $1 if the customer complains. The job is stupid & thankless from all aspects. But it's a choice, and something you do knowing the ramifications.

Long rant aside, Those $25-75 tips can mean the world to a guy like that. To me it usually came just after a major repair or new tires and meant the difference between Campbell soup and ramen. So I always tip a lot to my paper boys now.

Mail men are not allowed by law to accept tips.

Never met one who follows that law.

    Newspapers still serve purposes.
Something to read if you are in a non wi-fi area for instance.
They still are handy. Plus I've been reading that rag all my life.

paper route was my first job, did the afternoon route after school and the sunday morning paper (brutal).

did it on my bike with the overhead shoulder bag, keeping your balance on the bike was tough. would launch the paper from the sidewalk onto the stairs. most of the time the paper would bank off the side of the home which would leave black newspaper print on their paint. it'd take a really horrible throw (into a flower bed or bush) for me to get off my bike and pick it up.

didn't end up getting many tips at all, a couple fives and tens at most.

Which is all fine and good, except......

    a) I live in Fairfield County Ct. the mom and pop stores near me only carry the Connecticut Post, no out of town papers.
The Post is not worth it, UP and API syndicated cookie cutter news stories, crappy sports, unless you are interested in local HS sports, but I have no need to know how the Fairfiled - Warde HS baseball team did yesterday.

    b) For me to get a NY Times, NY Post, or NY Daily News I have to drive 1 1/2 miles to the Stop and Shop or Cumberland Farms.
Not doing that, only for a newspaper.

    c) Home delivery is so easy and convenient, and saves 35 percent off of the cover price.

Obviously you gotta put him on a 14pt 15-leg teaser that won't wrap up for at least 6 months.

I just realized I'll never be rich. I was thinking $100. But that's ok, being generous makes me happier than keeping the cash would. But anything is better than nothing (which I'm sure he'll get from 98% of his route.)
