there's major QC issues with the MBP retinas (both the 15" and 13" models), specifically burn-in/image retention on the displays and overheating. the only good supplier of these retina displays was samsung, but apple has moved away from them since the lawsuit.

now their main supplier for the retinas is LG and LG simply can not deliver quality. customers have been returning their MBP retinas right and left. there's tons of threads about these issues on the macrumors forums, suggest you read up.

the other major issue on the retinas outside of image burn-in is horrible lag. lag with basic page scrolling, trackpad gestures, and gaming. text blur has also been an issue on all browsers and ms office products.

something is very wrong with the hardware-software integration of the retina panel, which is not only slowing down the whole computer but also causing overheating and battery drain as well. the non-retina macbooks are testing far better than the retinas.

the whole retina concept is still in its infancy and there's much to be resolved before it becomes viable and dependable. the huge rate of returns on the ipad3 and retina macbooks is hurting apple very bad. while people are willing to pay top dollar for amazing displays, they're just as quick to return them and make a huge public spectacle of it if they're dissatisfied. many longtime mac fanatics have jumped ship which is reflected in apple's tanking shares.

I have the older 15 inch MacBook Pro, and absolutely love it, and I can never see myself buying anything besides a 15 in macbook pro for the foreseeable future. That being said, at 15 inches retina displays are somewhat unnecessary, only thing I would say is a must is the anti-glare.

Do you know if itouch 4g's or iPhones with retina are effected by the switch to LG?

This would make used Samsung supplied retina itouch 4g's more desirable right?

yes, samsung displays are HIGHLY desired currently by all mac retina consumers. the problem is that relations between samsung and apple have soured so bad, that samsung will no longer be supplying apple with screens in 2013.

samsung is still supplying apple with some displays (around 15% of apple's total supply), so many customers are now playing the screen lottery. they're buying devices, then opening them up to see which type of display they got. if it's an LG, they return it immediately and keep doing so until they get a samsung. it's causing an unprecedented amount of returns which has hurt apple a ton.

the problem with the LG retina displays are burn-in, edge light bleed, poor color saturation, and yellow tint. Sharp has also been supplying apple with some displays (which have been better than the LG's), but they're in major financial trouble right now and apple just invested over $2B into the Sharp plant in order to stabilize their supply chain.

the ipad 2 and iphone 4 were the last great models with no display issues. once all the 'retina' models started hitting the shelves, the problems quickly snowballed (unless it was a samsung display). the ipad 3 and new ipad 4 with LG retina displays have both had major issues, along with the macbook pro retinas which have been a complete disaster.
