    Anyone live in Maryland?

Red Sox to pull the upset tonight.

So there's a chance I might be moving to the College Park area of Maryland, looking at Alexadria area. Girl might be going to UM for a master's in criminal justice. Live just north of Houston now so I'm used to a cheap cost of living. What exactly can I look for in this area? Move wouldn't be until end of next year but want an idea for a job, ect.

    Thanks

From what I've skimmed over the COL is 24% higher than national average. I'm assuming average wages are slightly higher as well? Will have a history degree and several years of experience in restaurant/entertainment management on my belt.

Need to be in Maryland within a 30 minute drive of college park.

Sadly I've only known the crap south where every other car on the road is a 15 year old POS and I have to make sure I brush up on my spanish if I want to interact with people on a daily basis.

I live in Rockville. Bit pricey, but nothing compared to nyc or other big cities obviously.

Alexandria area would be even more expensive. as far as work, I'll tell u 80% of my friends work for a govt contracting firm. In Maryland healthcare field is big (NIH, and bio tech companies, lots of research labs, and medicine companies)
VA is more of IT central.

Lots and lots of military people around here as well. Life is good, but boring as penetrate. not much to do around here, after couple months you would've basically gone to all the "hot" spots as far as restaurants and clubs go.

Univ Of Maryland , I'm assuming she'll be going to college park, is in a very GHETTO area called PG county. It's like an extension of Baltimore ghetto. I know people that go to UM that got robbed, car broken into, and just followed by ghetto ass ppl. As long as you are within couple miles around the campus than you should be good.

    Where are you moving from?

Alexandria is beautiful but its really posh and pretty expensive, just get somewhere near a metro stop or walking distance to shops and bars. DC traffic is horrible.

Half hour north of Houston, I know about Baltimore being a cesspool, was hoping the college was at least far enough to not have to deal with the Baltimore people. She wants to go to college park, I'm thinking if I get lucky a job at a DC museum or some shit with my History degree, will be getting a PHD after she finishes school, but that's years away.

you should be fine with the history degree around here, LOTS and I mean LOTS of museums. And if teaching is what you are willing to do I'm sure u will be able to find a teaching position easily. and yes traffic is horrible espacially because they are doing construction everywhere around here. Expect to drive to most places here. I still have only used the metro once in the last 9 years i've lived in the area. Alexandria to UMCP is gonna be one tough commute.

Wait a minute. You are talking about living on the Virginia side of DC and your girlfriend commuting to the university of Maryland? That is a horrible way to live. You should look at maybe silver spring ( my dad lived there, suburban but you still have access to everything) maybe Annapolis. Its strange there is alot of crime in college park, maryland is the richest state in the whole country but I have heard college park is not the safest.

I don't know the area but it shows it's a 20 mile commute from Alexandria to College Park. Down here it's not uncommon to travel 40+ miles for school.

It's all a straight highway shot though.

I agree, the inner harbor is one of my favorite places in the country to visit. The whole The DC/Baltimore area is actually booming right now sports wise and its not just in lacrosse. Its been a while since I have seen it like this. I just wish college sports were better but the ACC is going to be the most dominant basketball conference in the country, I havent heard much about Georgetowns outlook for the season.

This would take a hour if you are lucky at prime time.

    Metro is an option

    Maybe this will help
    http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...X_Vu0zqWm0zJ0A

    Hope I did that right.

If not, google metro College park, it will show you the map.

I will still need affordability specs to help you with living proximity

    Hope that helps for now.

Its not far but DC traffic at rush hour doesnt move, maybe you can take the GW parkway. I just cant imagine trying to drive that every day bit I really dont know how bad it would be. Have you ever thought of just living in the city and having all that on your doorstep. Alot of places in Alexandria are just as expensive. Some cool places in arlington as well if you dont mind the commute.

Yeah. I dont have any idea what big east competition is going to be like in the future. Louisville will be great this year and Syracuse and Notre Dame are still there for the time being. I am just waiting for the ACC to finally take form in basketball. Pitt, Syracuse, Duke, UNC, NC State,,Notre Dame etc. Total dominance

I am a lacrosse fan and thats another dominant sport for the ACC with Maryland,Virginia, Notre Dame,Duke,UNC, and Syracuse.

Depending on where I find work in the area, looking for a one bedroom for $900 a month max. Given how bad traffic seems to be in the area, thinking a place north of DC would be ideal so she won't have to drive through it on her way to class.

I could push a grand, but would need a steady job in the area to accommodate that. Will have roughly 4 months of living paid for before the move.

    Whole state is a slum.
Drug addicts everywhere, traffic is among worst in nation, taxes high, more laws than most states.

There's like 2 mainly white counties in Maryland, Garret & Carroll, and those 2 counties are far from University of Maryland.

Maryland is also #1 state for gonerreha (std).

Crime is out of control (murders mainly)

The cost of living is insanely high.

Oh, a few sportsbooks wont let you have an acct if you live in MD as well.

My advice: stay in Texas (like ACL said)

Why do you guya consistantly bring up the white vs. black populatuon thing? Are yall really that racist??? Damn...but you're right about the Sportbook and maryland thing. Some allow for it, most dont. I believe MD, DC, and Washington State have laws against it
