    Anyone seen a computer this infected?

    A friend of mine started getting the false antivirus popups when her computer started up, and needed me to clean it up. Well look how bad this thing was. She blamed her brother.

    ur thread is very confusing. false as in a total scam and the superantivirus is the actual virus?

    I never know what any of that stuff means or if it's just an ad trying to get me to buy their clean up software, so I just reboot to a previous state or whatever

    I cleaned the false stuff off with SUPERAntiSpyware.

    There is some nasty malware out there that makes it look like a virus program, and alerts you of infections, which it is the infection. It also blocks you from going on the web, and turns off your real virus program. They are "FakeProtectors".

    So I had to use a USB drive and bring the portable SUPERAntiSpyware over to her computer, to scan and clean up.

    I hid Internet Explorer, and installed Firefox. Installed MalwareBytes, SUPERAntiSpyware and Spybot Search and Destroy.

    Agree about IE...slow piece of shet. I use Firefox and absolutely love it. Further, I haven't had a virus software program (norton, mcafee, etc.) on my pc for over 2 years without any problem. Waste of money and do nothing but drag down performance. Use common sense when surfing and use the above listed free sites ( by onlooker) you shouldn't have any problems. Also..those running servers... windows firewall is not an option.

    Those viruses that try to make you download "their" antivirus program are pretty slick. I got lucky when I got one and was able to find the product key to get rid of it on my phone.

    What is your opinion of Avast Antivirus? I thought I heard it also has a firewall of sorts as well.

    What do you use to get rid of rootkits? They are probably the most frustrating problems for the regular user. You probably need to run TDSkiller or combofix as well, then that list is complete.

    My experience is that the fake anti-virus pop ups will relate to rootkit.

    AVG, Avast and Avira are all good free ones.

    I use AVG and haven't had a problem.

    AVG has a rootkit scanner, and read a review that it scored good. I've never had one, so I don't know from personal experience.

    I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure I've seen rootkits that have attacked AVG and Malware and Spybot (and other major anti virus/spyware stuff) so they don't work properly. That is when I started using combofix and/or tdskiller and they've never not fixed the problem.

    Honestly, I've just formatted and did a clean install though the guidance offered on the web (similar to what Onlooker has been talking about) does work, just takes some time and know how.

    Oh, I've got it all down pat now after doing a lot of work on my parents, GF and GF's family's computers.

    My question was about how none of the posts before had referred to combofix or TDSKiller when, in my experience, they are the only things that work with some problems.

    Bugger having to format anything.

    This guy said it all. If you are using a legitimate copy of Windows and are paying for antivirus software, you're pissing money away. It is also not the bloated, resource hog, POS that most antivirus software is.
