What are you talking about. My buddy receive 10% on an account but he has to keep 100,000 in it. He is grandfathered on this account. But he is absolutely right.

You can earn 5% at some banks with deposit promo's, but these are strictly short-term and usually capped at $100,000. If you don't mind transferring your money around every few months you can chase promo's and earn way more than the standard rate.

Head to a forum like the www.redflagdeals.com Personal Finance & Hot Deals sections, where a lot of people are doing this. I do this myself in TFSA accounts, so I don't pay any tax on the gains either.

BTW, while I haven't seen any banks offering 5% interest yet, some will give a cash bonus, which if you do the math on the required term will come out to a 5% gain.
