I prefer lump charcoal over briquettes. It gives it a better flavor, although it burns faster.

How'd it go? I don't do charcoal so no advice. Mostly electric smoker for me.
For brining, I use a maple syrup in place of sugar. It's more pricey but works better.

Also, beer brine for chicken breasts is nice.

I only grill with charcoal. The difference between gas and charcoal is subtle, and probably not worth the hassle but there's something about it I like.
1. Use a starter DON'T USE LIGHTER FLUID. There are 2 kinds of starters = electric and canister, they both work fine. Electric starters mean you have to deal with the cord and when it gets hot you have to be real careful where you place it, and read the instructions carefully - don't leave it on for more than 10 minutes. The canister type is my favorite - just make sure you have newspaper around. Enjoy the flavor.
Best of Luck

i have one of those those you dump charcoal in and put newspaper in bottom
works great
last night was my best cooking
but i cannot seem to get the wood smokey flavor right so did not use any last night
you guys wet the wood or not??
i find it is just steam if i wet the wood, and if i don't, it just burns too fast
Give it time.....slow and steady over the coals. No flames

I don't wet the wood before I stick in.
Wetting them doesn't make them smoke longer, it just delays the time until they start smoking.
You might want to invest in a little smoker box to place inside the grill or rig one up with tin foil.
