Just Paid A Computer Team $360 for Two Year Service to Clean My Computer for Me

Basically I called Microsoft Windows up to find out why my installation of store bought copy of Microsoft Access wasn't already downloaded into my computer and activated like I thought it already was when I first installed it.

The guy took a look at my hard drive and something in Run:/ (typed in something in here) and up showed 6003 infected or maliious or shady files. He said I had to get this fixed before I could install it so he hooked me up with these guys who cleaned out the 6,003 bad files for like $360.00 and gave me a two year warranty.

They are using Hitman Software Pro 3.6 Version (64 Bit).

Is that good...am i getting ripped off here? As of right now Am I doing the right thing here boys? Spent too much or what?

I could have fixed it for $20.

Looks like I picked the right career path in school.

    LOL

Nah. I would never take people for a ride. It happens ALOT. Thats how some people operate.

    Im a honest business man.

To answer your question though yes you got raped.

You could have bought a Kaspersky cd at wal mart or even downloaded it off torrent to do what they did.

I have no idea what you just said but I just spent like 4 days worth of paycheck to get this baby on track (my laptop I mean).

So I guess it's not gonna help me since I have no clue the two things you mentioned were. Also aren't torrents themselves risky to down load? Why would I do that and risk getting more malware in this bad boy?

    Ok ill break it down.

What they did for you was all done automated.

In other words, with the right program, you could have done it yourself.

There are ALOT of 'cleaning' programs out there for free or paid.

Im happy for you that your PC is working good though.

Brand New on Black Friday my laptop in 2010 cost me just under $700.

PS - Under the "Run" program...the guy typed in eventvwr

He was then able to see the 6,003 suspect files I had.

I major in Information Systems Security.

Fixing a computer virus is a beginner course in that field.

Actually I didnt learn how to fix a virus from school.

When I got one I learned it from google.

    SportsGuy

    You got played...

    http://www.filehippo.com

Download malwarebytes (make sure you update it) and run it in safe mode with networking in Windows.

    Done.

    Not a penny spent.

    Two Questions:

    (1) Did you go to trade school for that? Or a regular 4 year college? I don't recall that being a major in any colleges I have seen (then again I graduated back in 2006).

    (2) Is eventvwr the right thing to type in the "run" program to access all crappy files in a laptop's hard drive?

I just clicked on file hippo and it didn't help. I am even more lost now as there are literally hundreds of links to choose from in there.

I recently returned to school last year after a long absense.

The major was not there back then. I think only in the last 5 years it started to be taught. Information Security Admins are projected to be needed ALOT in the next 10 years.

I would never go to a trade school. They arent accredited.

Here is some info on the cmd you asked about.

I know someone telling you to do something computer related, if you arent computer savvy, is like trying to read a foreign language.

The best advice I can give you to save money in the future?

Have a 3rd party firewall installed on ALL of your PC's.

FileHippo is a one stop shop for a bunch of programs that people use everyday, but what's good about them is they also offer free virus cleaning utilities that are good.

Malwarebytes is one of if not the best.

Re-imaging (just re-installing Windows) is probably the most effective way to go. Especially if you don't have any important data on the computer (hopefully your backing up to Gdrive or Dropbox), then screw it just re-install a fresh copy of Windows.

Without a doubt. Malwarebytes and CCCleaner are great utilities for keeping your PC running smoothly. Have to be a bit more careful with CC because you can do some damage to your registry which is a no no, but those two are must haves.

Apart from my a/v (Avast) I also use Malwarebytes and Spybot to run scans to check my PC. In the extremely rare event that something gets past the a/v, running scans with the other two will always catch it. Also use Ccleaner to clean up the junk. All those programs are free and will keep your PC running smooth.

Kaspersky is a firewall AND does everything that Malwarebytes does.
