Im sure a lot of posters here would back me up on this...I always stay a harrahs props and have always had a nice stay. Caesars, harrahs, flamingo, paris...all right in the center of strip. Not over the top casinos but not trash either.

When price shopping don't forgot to include the resort fees http://www.resortfees.com/... Personally if I was looking for a cheap room I would look downtown before some lower end places on the strip...

Not sure how adventurous you are but El Cortez on their website has a deal on their cabana suites (which are suppose to be pretty nice in comparison to the dumpy casino) for $60 a night which comes with $35 freeplay / $25 food credit (their steak house is excellent) for a two night stay... I would hit something like that up before I would pay for a base room at the Rivera...

I've stayed at Caesar's (in both the high end and low end rooms) and Paris (low end room)... In the case of the low end rooms I would have been pissed about the quality if they hadn't been comped and had I paid full rate for those rooms...

No need to stay on the strip so many shuttles take you there now

Go to like The Rio up the block and get better value

You can stay at hooters for less then 30$ a night. Right on the strip if that's what you want.

Check GOLD COAST also. Next to rio and palms

Riv. actually isn't that bad. Of course, it's a long way from staying at the Cosmo or Wynn, but you'll get more than your money's worth at the Riv for $25/night.

The place has improved a lot since new management took over last year. I know at least a portion of the rooms have been refurbed (never been in one) and the pit games have very player-friendly rules. Pai Gow has no commission, craps offers 1000X odds, single zero roulette, 3:2 single deck blackjack. The new steak house is affordable and has received good reviews (I haven't been there yet, but plan to go sometime soon.)

Riv is just too far away from the action and you will always find yourseld taking a cab/bus to get anywhere.

Ceasars properties do not charge resort fees and if you are going on a weekday, places like Harrah's, Flamingo, Imperial Palace and Ballys are pretty cheap. Rio and Gold Coast are also both solid choices but GC charges a resort fee.

As far as Harrah's property the Rio is actually good value for a low end room (decent sized rooms in comparison to older rooms I had at Paris and Ceaser's)... Also (as JJ pointed out) it is close enough to the strip to get there easy but far enough away to avoid that traffic if you heading somewhere else in town...

imperial palace is pretty much a dump, but rooms are cheap and you cant beat the location. when im flush and can stay where i want...monte carlo and bellagio are the best imo.
