Best dance/party record of all fukkin time is still:

    Propellerheads -- Decksanddrumsandrockandroll

Came out in 1998 and still unequalled. These guys fukkin killed it with that and set the bar, and then never put another thing out. Such a shame.

OP people ask me this all the time with me not being able to give the same answer twice, can't really single one out.
This is good though, copped on vinyl a while back, pointless thread though in hindsight, because most here A: would never have heard of it & B. wouldn't appreciate it for what it is.

A thread doesn't have to strike a chord (no pun intended) with everyone who reads it, but if at least one or two people heard something new because of it, that is cool... Or if I connected with one person (you) who shares some quality taste in music, that is cool too.

So you gotta give me somethin at least, what are some of your favorite CDs (is it weird to still say CDs?) for parties/ to get people moving?

My tastes in music cover nearly every genre... I've got a Sabbath thread in this very forum as a matter of fact, lol. I love all music. I search for great music under every rock. Most people have never heard of 90% of what I listen to, although real music-heads do know it all, it's not like I'm listening to local bands. They're all successful, just not necessarily on pop radio. I could go on and on about music.

For parties, some of my favorite stuff to play is the aforementioned CD, Daft Punk, DJ Shadow, Gus Gus, Herbie Hancock's Headhunters era stuff, The Herbaliser and other Ninja Tune stuff, DJ Krush, Deadmau5, People Under the Stairs, synth pop stuff like Postal Service, heavier stuff like RATM, really depends on the party.......

Usually play big places with me either supporting int. act or main set if theres no one in town, play current stuff mixed in with lots of unreleased tracks that I have hook ups for, mainly to get the fellow chin strokers/dj's waiting to play to ask what's this? With me replying sorry not out yet. At the risk of sounding like a douche was/is actually pretty big time in my city, was ranked in top 14 in my country couple years back, have toned down a lot lately though almost to the point where I'm taking a break from it for a while, will probably get back into it down the track, still young but I find the DJ scene has cheapened a lot lately by 18 year old kids that get decks and think they can mix within 6 months, self whore themselves to get gigs & proceed to train wreck every 2nd mix. Used to see so many kids like this with absolutely no clue & it's embarrassing to even have them on the same night as you but hey what can you do.

As you can see don't really have a chance to play much music that isn't below 120bpm, but I did run a smaller night here on thursdays mainly for music heads that wasn't genre restricted with me and a couple others playing and to be honest as hard it is to believe when this was played people would vibe, crowd was good.

If you're old enough to know better, a bunch of Beastie boys songs on random is the best way to get a party started.

Very cool, I've heard that. Gil Scott-Heron was a legend. Wild that he put something out at such an advanced age, but you get that really cool time-worn, life-lessoned vibe from him, like that late Johnny Cash stuff... Interesting how his musical background went from soul-jazz to trip-hop. Works for me!

So didn't realize you were an actual DJ, that's cool. I'm not at all, I just love to play music for people... I did take a DJ "class" once, but it really wasn't long enough... and I was disillusioned when I realized that all they focused on was house music with the same constant 4X4 beat. I can enjoy a good DJ like that every once in a while, but I was more interested in just how to mix/beat-match/etc. w ALL GENRES. Or at least all rhythm-based genres. My mix would include way more interesting rhythms than just the usual mind-numbing sh-t people dance to. I'm not as well-versed in DJ vocab as you, so I'm not even sure how to express my favorite kinds of beats but they'd include those old-school hip-hop/underground hip-hop kind of beats, as well as "breakbeat?" or whatever style that was that Propellerheads were so good at as well as others, like Chemical Brothers on their first two amazing records... but of course also Massive Attack/Portishead-style trip-hop as well... Okay, I've started rambling...

Oh, you know who's a crazy-good beat magician is Jack Dangers from Meat Beat Manifesto... his stuff can be samey but I always dig it. So I guess if I had to list my all-time favorite purveyors of beats, it'd be, in some order, DJ Shadow, Jack Dangers, the aforementioned Propellerheads, early-ish Chemical Brothers, The Herbaliser (so f'n good, and even orchestral sh-t!), Mix Master Mike, DJ Krush, Four Tet, Prefuse 73... I could go on and on.... Oh, and you wanna know what beats are fukkin boring as hell....ALL current hip-hop played on the radio. BORING AS FUKK. Drives me absolutely up a wall! How could hip-hop have REGRESSED so much over the years? Who can bob their head to this junk now?

    Thread has potential.

Ok I'll bite, if I were to compile a list of records for a soundtrack to my life this would be on it.

You're a big beat guy you say, so am I, there is actually a lot of stuff thats been put out recently that you would enjoy, it's just hard for most to find when your job isn't sourcing music.
I agree with you on hip hop has gone downhill, but in saying that - hasn't all music? You'd have an argument for most genres but let's not delve into that too much.

There is still good hip hop out there, few producers have been making waves lately and there has been quality stuff put out, obviously most stuff on the radio is bubblegum rap with flawed beats and then you've got all these lame top 40 rappers that borrow a 4X4 beat so that guys playing uptempo stuff in clubs will buy and be able to play their music too. I guess pop is the same nowadays as well, lots of garbage with uptempo tracks.

    Oh well, whaddayagonnado.

Yeah most top 40 rap or urban in general is rubbish, but if you dig a little deeper there is some
decent stuff out there for this day n age, we used to play a lot of this sort of stuff at the night.

    \

New R&B dude called the Weeknd, probs be big soon, I think you would appreciate these beats if you like breakbeat.

New guy supposedly next big thing but mainly it's just most of his beats are done by a talented producer in claims casino,
source his latest instrumentals album via google, if you like trip hop you will you will enjoy it.

Actually this would probably be the song that would get the best reception at any time of the night.

If you've been to a Erykah Badu concert you would know you get the best show imaginable,
she plays with a big band, plays some of the track live on a controller and edits them live as well,
her voice is incredible as well and holds high notes with ease.
Some music guy said best show since James Brown which I can't comment on as I''m too young.

Anyway, of course finally this would be played near the end of the night & popular too especially with the ladies.

Maybe this later on as well.

Looks like I'm a massive hip hop / urban fan but I appreciate most music for what it is,
I'm just singling out hip hop in response to what you said which was true. I enjoy other genres just as much as hip hop and being a dj helps you appreciate all well produced music.

Damn, Showtiime, I love this thread now -- nothing beats sharing music... I'm wicked sorry (we say that here in Boston ) that I didn't reply yesterday! I was getting a great reply ready for your psychedelic rock post above and then I just got distracted and never got to it.... but now that you added 96 more vids, I will get back at you today with my thoughts and vids of some of my fave beat-based stuff, 'kay? Peace... be back later...

P.S. By the way, you obviously read Pitchfork.com, right? Cuz there's a bunch of stuff on The Weeknd and some of the other people you posted or mentioned above. Very cool site, albeit a bit snobby about 83% of the time.

Fukk, I never got to this today!!!!!!!!!!! All right, I'm exhausted right now, but I said I would post some things after you posted all that, Showtiime, so let me see if I can do it quick!!!

Obviously I could spend a million years on this, and will happily spend more time later, but for now I will try to stick with the THEME we had been chatting about in here somewhere about beat-based stuff.....

So here will be some examples of some great cuts (in various genres) that could be described as "beat-centric," if you will.....

    Let us begin.............

Gotta get The Herbaliser in here... guys can do anything... and love when they work with Jean Grae, she's a great rapper. This prob isn't the very best example of them, but I love it because when do you EVER hear a rap song with a fukkin badass brass section??

I can't decide what vid to put for Boards of Canada!!!! They're my all-time fave electronic act, bar none. The music they make is just transcendent... takes you to another plane of existence. I don't do drugs, but their music sounds like a drug-trip to me, but in the best possible way. They way they combine melody, old analog synts, rhythm, strange found-sound samples... pure awesomeness. Gotta to go to bed, so just going with this one, I mean they're all good to me anyway. (If we were still talking about parties, BoC is for the part when people are just in a spaced-out bliss lying around at 4:30 a.m. )

Showtiime, where the fukk you at, boy? Put in a bunch of vids last night! For that matter, anyone else checking this stuff out??

Realized I forgot Prefuse 73... another beat master... the uncontested master of glitch-hop. Yeah, it's done on a laptop, but so what, guy can not only bob your head but has a great sense of melody... Here's a good one. Try not to start bobbing your head when it really kicks in at :22!

Sorry guy, I meant to post but forgot, Yeah most Prefuse 73 is good listening

Here is some newish music that isn't top 40 that you might like.

New guy blowin' up from NJ, gettin that big $$$ deal for producing for crappy florence & machine biz so I'm hoping he doesn't sell out too much but does he does some good beats for rappers too

Personal fave, used to play it at the club, girls love this. It's also a great hip hop beat can't find the track on youtube though.

What's up, Showtiime and others? Showtiime, I do like the Clams Casino stuff... reminds of Prefuse 73, Flying Lotus, other cats like that. Cool. Phantogram starts off nicely but never goes anywhere. Do you know Junk Culture? One or two interesting tracks from them.

Hey anyway, I realized I forgot to put my "reply" to your psychedelic entry from above by Aphrodite's Child, which was cool and featured an incredibly dated video that makes me think of grindhouse movies or something weird like that. For my reply, I'm putting the this "lost" song that Shadow put on his Diminishing Returns mix. It's more of a standard rock song, but it's clearly from the 70s and has that psychedelic feel. NO ONE HAS BEEN ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE SONG. I think Shadow isn't telling, which is funny.

Anyway, it's nothing amazing but I like its vibe, and I especially love the end after 3:00 with the "democratic flag" refrain that fades the song out. Kind of a haunting little lost song.

Oh, don't forget to listen to the Porcupine Tree cut I put in another thread. Sound quality is crap sadly, but I can listen to it over and over. So well done for a simple song.

That D.J. Shadow song is really cool. When was it made? It took me a while to think of what it reminds me of, but I got it. There's a scene in 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' where Raoul Duke's all torqued up on the adrenochrome.... the song "Expecting To Fly" by Buffalo Springfield comes on. The D.J. Shadow song goes a little faster, but the dual voices, guitars.... very similar.

Right now I'm on a Lupe Fiasco kick, I cannot get this song out of my head when I hear it, which is quite apropos:

Where'd everyone go? I was getting excited at the idea of a music thread where people pop in, check stuff out, toss up some shit they're into... let's keep this going!

Guess I'm late to the party with chick, but wow, she's a talent. Esperanza Spalding. This song sounds SO 70s jazz/R&B but is brand fukkin new. The bass line is intense. And I love how complex the melody is for a "pop song". Apparently this chick is a prodigy -- she was TEACHING bass at Berkeley as a flippin' teenager.
