    good bump

itunes shuffle has produced this bouncy gem

great build up, perfect breakdown, keys, gospel chants & then the drop.. very feel good, used to play this a bunch actually, intro could be mixed with pretty much anything uptempo

aeroplane only one of select few doing good disco these days. nice dude too, met him when he was touring these parts a while back

Good to hear from ya, showtiime, and thanks for posting. That song started promisingly and interestingly for me but I was only so-so on the second half. But I will check out Aeroplane some more.

Shifting gears a bit, this band is my favorite discovery of the year thus far easy. Wye Oak. They're sort of an indie/folk/rock duo from Baltimore. Something about this just sounds REAL to me. LEGIT. Her voice marries perfectly with the music and the melodies are so gorgeous. Then when they want to rev it up and get noisy, it's also amazing. This was the song I first heard:

What's "balotanui," is that some joke way I don't know of ragging on Lookingtostart for his hackneyed selection? Just curious. Or do you know him and that's his name?

His avatar/pic is a photoshop of Mario Balotelli (Italian soccer player that plays in the English Premier League)
& Nic Natanui a player who plays AFL (Australian rules football), both black as you could get.

    It's pretty funny actually, props

ok capy here is something that should amuse you for a while, last 50 tracks played on itunes, mostly on shuffle but I'm hard pressed to find anything that would fall into 'filler' category with the exception of a couple, you'd appreciate majority there though, lots of good stuff. Think you'll have a field day with some of these as your taste doesn't differ too much from mine. was going to PM instead but might as well air the laundry out in here

gives you an idea of what I listen to at home kinda, diversity rears it's head throughout

go from "witch house" (not really a genre but it's the best way to describe it)

    to funk at it's finest

to the lovely lykke li (dark as hell yes, but I love it)

    to the always great ratatat

to the vocal stylings of miss nneka, african chick who sings & raps, could be the new badu but untapped in US market at the moment

you've probably heard of james blake but just in case

guys from down under, psychedelic rock, blowin' up now, were on fallon last year

bibio fan here, can't go wrong

think I posted weeknd on last page but ''stripped back rnb" is where its at, has only released mixtapes but lots of hype & is the real deal, touring US now, lots of rappers fighting to get his vocals on their record, used to throw this on when I'd bring girls home on the regular after nights out, they melt for this shit

& finally, one of my fave bands - !!!

Luv ya, Showtiime. My favorite music snob. Only you would use the term "witch house" to describe a music genre, and do it semi-seriously at that.

And yes, I either know or have heard of about 92% of your iTunes shuffle results. I will def check out some of your recs that I'm not already familiar with, though, for sure...

Sadly, I've only recently entered the world of modern technology (due to some unfortunate difficulties with my home PC) and so am mostly not an MP3 guy yet. Have had an iPhone for a year-and-a-half but had epic problems syncing it up. Hopefully past that now. Anyway, my reply to you will be a simple list of the last 25 CDs I've played according to the stack next to my CD-player:

The Bad Plus - For All I Care
Meshell Ndegeocello - Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape
    Wye Oak - Civilian
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile
    Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity
    Elliott Smith - New Moon
Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will
Christian Scott - Yesterday You Said Tomorrow
    The Roots - Game Theory
    Unsane - Blood Run
Dntel - Life is Full of Possibilities
Illyah Kuryahkin - Count No Count
    The Dead Weather - Horehound
    Broadcast - Tender Buttons
    Opeth - Deliverance
    Mastodon - Blood Mountain
The Go! Team - Thunder Lightning Strike
    Sebadoh - Harmacy
    Fennesz - Endless Summer
    King's X - Dogman
    Hive - Devious Methods
    Stereolab - Sound-Dust
    Mice Parade - Obrigado Saudade
    DJ Krush - Meiso
    Burial - Untrue

The Bad Plus are just too fukking cool. I'm really digging the one I posted above, it has a rare guest vocalist and some crazy and awesome selections for covers. Here's an old classic:

not first time I've been called music snob but I guess it's a compliment, capy you need to step your mp3 game up. digital world will only enhance your music library x 100, I'm of a different breed having done the DJ thing but I'd say I would be well in excess of a terabyte (1000 gigs) of 320kbps mp3s & wavs on my mac including 1000's of albums + 700+ vinyls records, can't remember how many cd's but not as much.

anyways lets keep this thread goin' for a bit with what we're listening to as we post. Start of with urban vibe in Frank Ocean

I'm sure you've heard of him, hasn't been this much hype around an artist for 3+ years & with good reason, guy is just as good live, killed it at coachella couple months ago

I played this on the radio first guy to preview it in our country, had 100's of callers askin' about the album & so far it's only mixtapes but catchy nonetheless, very summery vibe

Whazzup, people? Showtiime asked me not to let this thread die... and so, a Call to Arms! This thread has given you life, people... and now you must defend it. Huzzah! Til the end I shall fight for her honor, this thread shall not perish on my watch! Okay, sorry, I'm getting sleepy and loopy.

Anyway, I have been UNINSPIRED by anything new lately... so here's a great track from the last CD I was listening to, which you all already know anyway... and if you are young and didn't know it, you know it now because they used it in the Avengers trailer. Trent is just too fukkin genius in the studio -- guy is underrated as a studio whiz (yes, he's praised, but still underrated for what he's done), no one has gotten more great tones out of a guitar for instance. Anyway...

Tex, thanks for that heads-up on Civil Civic. Hadn't heard of them and I liked that cut you posted. I'm a big instrumental rock/prog/electronic guy, and that song reminds of me of my beloved Tortoise a little bit. Maybe not quite as complex, but nice melody and nice adventurous spirit to it. I will check them out.

Showtiime will be cross with me, but I'm still not feeling ANY new urban/hip-hop/R&B... I still feel the need to rep the older stuff in this thread, when rappers had real flow and weren't whining about stupid shit over a lame melody and half-ass beat. Check Gift of Gab out here -- has anyone ever been able to rap like him?

i like gift of gab/blackalicious, but it never really hit me like OH MY GOD even though they used to have a massive underground following.

i like you am not huge on new hip-hop, but lived and died by that shit in the mid-to-late 90s.

this guy is probably my favorite now. pretty weird delivery for the most part, but this song is pretty straightforward.

Gotta say I don't get what the fuss is about with ASAP Rocky. Like I am really not feeling him at all. But a guy with an extremely similar name who is a crazy motherfukker and who I DO think is extremely talented is Aesop Rock. Whether you like him or not, guy can spit and is obviously hyper-intelligent, unlike a lot of these other clowns.

This is actually my favorite Aesop Rock, because it's with DJ Krush, whose beats are always sick (see my post on page 1 of Krush with CL Smooth! loooove that one) ...Anyway, Aesop's lyrics/rap here go super well with Krush's trippy beat and music.

text - crazy coincidence, partied with Danny Brown literally the weekend before last, was touring these parts of the world & couple friends were warming up for him (DJ'ing) so got the treatment invited back stage etc, went through copious amounts of booze, spoke with him for a bit although sometimes could barely make out what he was sayin', from what I could comprehend he seemed fairly down to earth but a bit weird at the same time. Personally, not a fan, too raw for me but tagged along to check the show anyway, although in saying that can definitely see the appeal & see how he's gained a strong following in not too long a time.

capy - cmon man', not feelin' frank? small sample size there but "swim good" is a summer anthem waiting to happen, if you ain't vibin' to that your inner feel good is disappearing! LP is out on Def Jam later this year.
Also heard last year that coldplay reached out to him & asked him to be their opening act for their world tour, chris martin must be a fan. You could say that's kind've lame as it's coldplay but exposure to fans of "the biggest band in the world" can only be good if he wants to be heard on a larger scale, maybe some of those kooks will be introduced to r'n'b (real) in the process so theres a plus as well.

re: ASAP Rocky, you see a lot of these rappers that get hyped to the point when they eventually release their first record it falls short of public expectation. Don't think that will be the case this time, this guy isn't really doing things different but as I stated last page, he has a leg up on others because of his affiliation with clams casino, of course the beat / backing is just as if not more important as the vocal itself & of course this extends to all genres but what you have here is a guy pushing this spacey sound (sorry capy couldn't pin a genre to it) & it just happens to go very well with hip hop. I mean just take a look in this thread, texthooper sounds like a hip hop head through 'n through & hates most new stuff like us but sifts his way through the crap & picks out asap to tout as someone he's listenin' to, that alone should paint a picture. Although in saying all of this you just might not appreciate/like him full stop, that's fine - everyone has different tastes, you take any random bunch of dudes & they'll vibe on one track & then it's love vs hate with the next, opinions are fun that way.

^^^el-p is the shit, even if this isn't one of his better cuts (sorry donk). it's still trademark el-p though.

i like aesop rock too. labor dayz was my shit when it came out. getting more and more into black milk these days, love his beats. that ep he did with danny brown rules.

but capy man i don't know what to say.

honestly, here's the thing dude...asap rocky is an old soul. he's just a tremendous talent. he's a super young dude, has an insane ear for beats, and raps in a style that is not indigenous to his area of the country at all.

i grew up and live in memphis, the most ghetto fukkin city in the world besides detroit or like, gary, indiana or some shit. not that i'm any kind of gangster or anything, but there is a big sense of pride musically in this city, and these guys here are just too ignorant to have ever made anything out of it, and we have watched city after city blow the eff up while memphis never really has and never will emerge as a true scene with multiple national acts. so there's always been a chip on this city's shoulder about all these various groups and shit coming out of like the midwest and the west coast and shit and they're jocking memphis. like bone thugs, triple six used to have huge beef with those dudes. in the mid nineties i listened to all kinds of local shit, and now everything you hear sounds like that shit. and i'm telling you man, if some new york kid starts rapping like he's from houston or memphis, he better come correct.

i'm just telling you, as a memphis local, this new york kid is the real deal. i mean, he's even showing up on juicy j's shit and everything. you obviously don't have to like it but you have got to respect it.

i posted palaces not only because of the beat (clams casino, as has been said multiple times in this thread, is the shit) but because he uses like 4 flows in that shit. that shit took my breath away the first time i heard it. i was like who does this motherfukker think he is? shit is crazy though, the whole tape is awesome.

showtiime, you have posted a lot of good shit i haven't heard of. not as into the r and b, but what are you gonna do. i especially like the one you said would be on a soundtrack to your life or something like that. i wish i was a full time true head, i just don't have the patience i used to have. i love all kinds of music (like everyone says haha), i played guitar in a hardcore band for about 15 years and now i'm trying to get another hardcore/metal type band together, so that's kinda where i'm coming from. but i love all kinds of shit. and i also find that as i get older i start to feel the same way about all the genres i like...that they're all "just not what it used to be". it's about getting old i guess, harder to find shit that moves you after you've heard so much shit.

anyway, here's another song just to keep up. just a classic, changing things up and posting something old, but too many folks slept on this record. criminally underrated album. i still feel like i need to spread the word about these guys haha...

Wow. Tex, Showtiime, etc., I really appreciate you guys' passion about hip-hop. I guess I shouldn't try to argue with you since it sounds like you are really into it and know your shit. I guess I will have to admit that, even though I love a lot of hip-hop, it is not my main thing. You guys seem more locked in to that scene and the artists, so I DEFER to you on it!

Don't get me wrong, I have loved a lot of hip-hop in my life (DJ's more than rappers, but still, both), but by no means have I ever been an expert in the genre. So to close the topic, I will simply list the hip-hop artists whom I have been exposed to whose music has brought me the most joy:

DJ Shadow, The Herbaliser, DJ Krush, RJD2, Public Enemy, People Under The Stairs, and a variety of DJ's and rappers on the Ninja Tune and Def Jam labels.

And now, on to other genres...

...So if I were to pinpoint the genres that are closest to my heart, they'd probably include:

    Post-rock
    Prog-rock
    Indie rock
    Shoegaze
    Metal

Obviously, you can go bonkers when you start talking genres, because most great bands blur the line between them. But still, I think those above are my favorites...

I would post vids, but I'm getting sleepy so I'll have to do that tomorrow... The vids may include any of the following bands, who I've been listening to lately and who meet one or more of those genres:

Tortoise, Pelican, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Jaga Jazzist... Lush, MBV, Pell Mell... Cave In... King's X...

All right, gotta hit the hay.

Thanks to all for listening and/or keeping this thread going!

Okay, can't help it, one vid-post and then bed!

Tortoise have been one of my favorite bands since I discovered them in the late 90's. The biggest praise I can give them is that, despite making consistently melodic and compelling music, you can't even name what fukkin genre they are. They're originals. One second they're rock, then they sound more like jazz, then like a soundtrack from a spaghetti western, then totally effed up experimental electronic shit... they bring in elements from not only many genres but from all across the years and all across the globe.

Since you mention modern dance/disco/whatever, your last post reminded me about Royksopp. U know them, right? Really really loved their first two records, just haven't picked up their more recent stuff yet.

And this is actually my favorite track of theirs. More of a hip-hop/breakbeat feel than discoey... such an uplifting cut...

in keeping with the spirit of the thread here is something a little more upbeat. these kinds of bands, i like but this isn't necessarily my first love, as capy said about hip-hop, but i love this group right here:
