Bought my wife a 1.0 carat round cut when we got engaged. Probably around 5k.

On our 10th anniversary, which is also when we had our kid, I upgraded her to a 3.2 princess cut on a platinum setting.

It's a beautiful ring. It was expensive, buy the reality is she gets half of whatever I have anyway.....so I might as well keep her.

This. Pretty much same story with me. The level of ring that is expected will vary based on where you are at in life. I bought my wife a 1 carat, good quality ring for around 5k, but I was a pretty broke law student at the time. Had I been where I am now financially, more would have been expected. And, like you Opie, I plan on upgrading it to a more baller one soon, now that I'm makin dat paper.

They say you should spend 3 months salary on your wife's wedding ring. Personally i dont plan to ever get married and maybe im a prick but id never spend over a grand on a wedding ring much less 15k on one. Lets see i can buy my wife a 15k wedding ring that she can show off to her friends or.....

We Cant invest this money in a conservative fund for 18 years add $100 per month to it at 3%. Now when my first kid is ready to go off to college i have 54,000 saved up. That could probably pay for his first semester of school in 2030.

3 months salary is the standard going rate, at least out here in the tri-state ...

If you don't go crazy on the clarity though you can probably get a decent sized ring for cheaper. Don't go to Tiffany's, Macy's or any place like that. They'll rip you off and you'll be able to get the same ring at a private jeweler for 30% cheaper if not more. Go directly to the Jewelers in NY or the Diamond Exchanges type deal. Better off getting a ring there if you don't know any jeweler's personally ...

    That's not true.

If you give it to her on certain occasions like her birthday, your anniversary, Christmas, Valentines, etc. then it's considered a gift and you're beat. If you give it to her outside of events like that then you can legally get the ring back.

No not really. Engagement and wedding rings are done once the wedding takes place. If you split before the wedding uou get it back.

JJ I got my wife a 3/4 Caret princess cut Solitaire ring for $1200. The diamond is nearly flawless. Then if you ever decide to get married, just get the wedding band soldered together and it will look a lot bigger. The Solitaire diamonds can look beautiful and classy.

The word decent is actually subjective and should never be the decisive factor when looking for one. Based on how things go about in years, it is a standard for the ring to be at least 1.5 of the groom's monthly salary. But that is just the ideal one and something going around in social circles for a very long time already. But in any case that you want to stay economic, anything that you would like would suffice already.
