    No wish to hijack Sammy's thread but for me it was a confluence of factors:

    1) I lived and studied in Edinburgh which meant I was technically living at home albeit I only ever went home when I needed laundry done or a good feeding (or my wallet needed replenishment).

    2) Edinburgh is a student town/city but in the Summer (Edinburgh Festival time) is absolutely crawling with tourists, many of whom are female students. During term time, there were parties at a rate of 3 or 4 a week and crashing somewhere was never a problem.

    3) The Student Union bar sold beer for 48p (77 cents at current FX rate) a pint, that was 20+ years ago mind you.

    In short I had no responsibilities aside from study, I didn't have any financial concerns and I had my fill of the things that are important to any young guy (beer and sex).
