I want to make it clear, im serious and this is true.
Here is the short version. I have worked for my employer for 11 + years and on my way up the ladder It has become very clear to me that my employer knowingly hires illegals and doesnt comply with the I9 requirements. A few years ago I was told by an illegal alien that she was in fact illegal. She told me the whole story as to how she and her friends snuck in and that is why her daughter is still in Guatamela, she told me it cost her so much to be brought in and she cant afford to bring in her daughter. I reported this to my boss and he told me rather bluntly to STFU and to tell her to STFU about how she got here. I felt I had done what I was required to do and let it go.
Now I am the highest level person in my business, the "boss" in fact. Last week, I was entering all the school parent authorizations and making sure I had all the required child labor paperwork. I came upon a person who now works under me and noticed that I did not have the proper I9 documentation. I was told by my supervisor that there is no I9 documentation and to enter it in our computer database that I did have it. I made it clear that I did not ant to and my supervior put it in that we did have documentation that in fact we dont have.
Now I am really concerned because I feel that if the SHTF here I could be the one to get held responsible since I am now the direct supervisor of this illegal person and I know the person to be illegal. My problem is that I know if I reported this and my supervisor found out, I would be fired. I have seen years of vindictiveness from this person. an excuse to fire me would be found, but at the same time I am quite worried that I am committing a serious crime by knowingly going along with this.
If I were to report, would there be any protections to keep me from facing repercussions ? Or is it just like everything else where the law says its illegal for the employer to get back at you, but if they do, oh well you have to hire an attorney. who can afford to hire an attorney when they dont even have a job anymore ?
Anyways, any advice would be appreciated.
