I wish I was Steve Bartman

I just watched a re-showing of "Catching Hell." I felt sorry for him most of the special, more so after it was noted that the guy who ended up with the foul ball selling it for $100k, until near the end where it was said that Bartman passed up on hundreds of thousands of dollars in commercials and other offers.

Damn, now I envy him. Screw death threats and that "woe is Steve Bartman" stuff. He could buy top notch security and bling on the side... maybe a big tattoo of a picture of the famous incident, as a kind of "**** you."

It wasn't a home run, a foul ball.

If you lived here when it happened, you would never say you wish you were him. That dude went through hell, people were crazed maniacs after the cubs choked.

As security escorted Bart out of stadium, security put his sw/shirt over his head, in attempt to save his anonymity. One of the enraged Cub fans pulled it down (borderline-assault) to reveal Bart's face to the cameras in the runway.

Yeah, okay, its not like we didn't know what he looked liked.

Its crazy how they took him into dispatch, and made him dress up in security clothes just to get him out of the park alive. pretty ******* disgusting, that they would have to go to the length.

Anybody that says they wouldnt have tried to catch that ball is a damn liar - not like he reached into the field of play - a ball is flying at you - you try to catch it - end of story!

Damn straight I would've caught the ball. I would've also been dressed and behaving like a shy nerd, while still a fan of the team as to drum up hype. I might also pay off camera men to get good shots of me after I steal a fly ball. I got the feeling from the ESPN special that there was a lot of intricacy in what made Bartman so famous.

If Moises Alou didnt pull that damn temper tandrum after missing the foul ball the whole Bartman event would never of existed. The fans watched him yell and swing his arms in the air in frustration. And they went nuts like he did. If he just let it go and walked away, theres no way the fans would of acted like they did.

I played baseball from age 5 to age 22 in college, was down the first base sidelines at Great American Ball park a few years ago, ball came towards me in the first row and I leaned backwards... Votto caught the ball about a foot in play.

It isn't a natural reaction, you just need to know where you are..

Bartman was a little geek... if you watch the replay again, after the initial reach for the ball, he made another grab for it about 3 seconds after that as it bounced around again. So that squashes the natural reaction... he was just a nerdy little bitch that wanted a baseball.

It was Alex S. Gonzalez's fault anyway.

Agree that Alex Gonzales had the chance to snuff the rally with an easy play or Bartman would be off the hook.

Yeah but Bartman is that nerd people love to rip on in highschool. He's a meek loser that was confirmed meek loser in the fail attempt at catching the ball and then doubly so when he just sat there like a wet cat trying to disappear. If the guy had looked like Brad Pitt and walked like he had a 10in dick people would have just let it be and there would be no story.

I remember hearing the mayor of Miami or something offered him residency. Also, didn't Moises Alou say he probably wouldn't have caught the ball? Bartman did nothing wrong. Cubs suck.

He says he would've when interviewed for the ESPN special.

    Bartman did nothing wrong.
I don't buy this, completely. If he'd been a casual fan who'd been to just a few games in his life, I'd accept that, but he had season tickets or something like that. I will say that Alou not getting the out there had a small impact on the inning. If the short stop doesn't boot the double play ball or the pitchers don't blow chunks, it wouldn't have mattered.

I do not know about the rest of the statements but Alou must have just been covering Bartman's ass because every angle from camera shots showed that he had a play on the ball.

I think you can probably blame everyone in that section because about 5 people went for that ball. Unfortunately Bartman was the only one that actually touched it.

    Poor Guy.

Yeah, atleast he could have played it off a little better. Admit he was drunk as hell and lost track of what was going on and just play it cool.

Instead if just sat there and let people push him around.

While others did reach towards the ball, only Bartman stuck his arm about a foot and a half into the field of play and batted the ball.

I think they all reached into the field of play but Bartman was just in the best position to actually make a play on that ball. I believe if you switch Bartman's seat with any of those other guys on his left or right.. the outcome would be the same. Someone would have interfered with the ball.

Anyhow, that didn't happen and Bartman is curse.

Yeah, but people wouldn't have hated those other guys as much because at least they weren't little douchebags wearing headphones at a baseball game.

Did I watch the game? Buddy, I was in the bleachers for that game. Which means I didn't have a good view on the play, but believe me, I've seen it millions of times, the guy reaches in the field of play.

    http://www.google.com/imgres?q=Bartm...:429,r:26,s:40

Alou's arm is going straight up from the field of play just about, a very very slight curve to his arm, but as you can see from this picture, Bartman is sticking his arm at least a foot and a half into the field of play. He is the only person in the crowd to do so.
