Indocin (which can be hard on your stomach) or colchicine (which can be hard on the GI tract) are the 2 drugs I usually write for gout...

If you have it frequently, allopurinol is a med that you can take for prevention. Once you get an acute attack, stop the allopurinol, it can make an acute attack worse.

    Avoid alcohol, seafood...

I had it in Sept for the first time in my life. At night it felt like my big toe was constantly stung by hornets. I had to walk with a limp. It went away in 2 weeks but I don't think it is 100%.

I can remember the first episode I had , I thought that I had broken my big toe the previous night,,,,ahhh man you cant even have a blanket laying on your toe without going through extreme pain ..for me colchine is a very very good medicine for me , the first 'tingling' of pain I take one of those in the morning and at night and if you are lucky enough it will wipe it out. still dont totaly understand why the(my) body does not break down 'uric acid'..which forms 'crystal like (?)....in the furthest extremity of your body (big toe)

I have had it for 19 years. I take 400mg of Allopurinol daily to keep my Uric acid level down. When it flares up, it's the most painful thing ever.

dont know if you can really 'cure' gout.....just 'preventive measures' which keeps the uric acid in check....btw does anyone know what part of the body does not "break down" or expell the uric acid that causes so much freaking pain...I do know that people do not understand how painfull this chit is

uric acid comes to be when the body metabolizes(breaks down) purine. over time, humans have been losing a key enzyme called uricase, which used to break down the uric acid. also if there is under excretion of uric acid in the urine, then it can lead to increased serum levels, causing uric acid to crystallize and localize itself in joints and tendons(mostly the "big toe joint" for lack of proper medterm.)

I get it in my foot and ankle. Never really in my toe. Allopurinol 300mg. Stress is a big factor for me and gambling causes stress. Needless to say I have been limping around since football season started.

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by to much uric acid in the blood. Uric acid crystallizes and accumulates in joints causing painful inflammation.

I am going today to get a shot of steroids. I usually don't do that though. I usually keep some prednisone around for extended flair ups.
