We are gonna start getting mail every 3 days or so. They should just let it go private. Government workers are seriously the worst. Laziest and most uneducated ppl I have met.

well, what do you expect when you only charge 44 cents for mail.

if it goes private, they'll start charging $5 a mail.

I go to the post office almost every day to drop things off for work. The workers there are the worst. Absolutely inept, lazy, and rude. No wonder they "go postal"

The 44 cents they charge for first class mail is not the problem
neither is the discounted bulk mail.
It the express mail and packages that they lose money on because they use the first class mail to subsidize the cost. thats why a few years back FedEX and UPS went to congress to try and stop them from doing it.
Also when you have a very top heavy management, workers that do a 4-6 hour day and streach it into a 8 hour day, have locations that have several full time employees with benefits that bring in less then $10k a year, and that pay outside Trucking companies to move the mail at a much higher cost then they should.
If it was a real private business they would of been bankrupt long time ago.
I am sure being a postal worker is hard work and i'm sure they feel they are under paid.
But remember it's delivering mail, not brain surgery.
I did the same thing when i was 10yrs old with a paper route, and i was responsible
    for collecting money

they need to raise postage rate to $1, stop sat deliveries and eliminate the 'if it fits, it ships'.

ive shipped items that would normally cost $15 with ups/fedex for $4.90 with usps. it's crazy.

They have started heading in the right direction by closing all the useless post offices. Just in my town they have 2 post offices. A huge one in the center of town and then a rinky dink one that has no carriers, one clerk and one manager. It is just there to sell PO Boxes. They close that and they have saved themselves

$125k in salaries(assuming they are not just moved to another office)
    rent for the space
    benefits for the 2 workers

all told it is probably $250K right there. That is just one office. Do that times all these useless PO's with small manpower Across USA that is a lot of cake saved.

Then they truly have to become self governing.

The PO makes all their money from selling of products, yet they can't set the rates for the products. Congress sets the rates for post office products and to change the rates, congress has to approve it. Postal rates are so cheap b/c congress won't approve the rate hikes necessary to make them competitive.

They are too worried about the backlash that would happen. Like someone wouldn't vote for them if they made a stamp 50 cents.

The post office's problems are not unsolvable, they are just dealing with levels of red tape that are putting them behind the times

If they raise it to a dollar for a first class stamp, these idiots will find the way to lose $10 billion.

I totally disagree. If USPS goes private, the free market will dictate a cheaper more efficient way to receive mail. First of all, no one would get paper mail. Everything would go electronic except for packages. Why do we even get paper mail? It's stupid.

I don't know. It would still be nice to know my mail is real and not digital like the direction money is heading.

This why the post office will be relevant for a long time. This article was as of last year.

Government isn't designed to make money or be efficient.

Think of the salaries some of these people are making. It doesn't make economic sense. Same thing as what happened to Detroit

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/o...,2889672.story

If one was to believe the recent propaganda by the Postmaster General, you would think the internet, the economy and the declining mail volume has made the United States Postal Service (USPS) unprofitable- thus they must eliminate Saturday delivery and close local Post Offices in order to survive. This is simply not accurate. While it is true that mail volume has declined over the past ten years, the Postal Service, with cooperation from its labor unions, has made the appropriate business decisions to remain competitive and efficient. The real reason behind the "loss" of billions is a law that requires the Postal Service to pre-fund its future retiree's health benefits for the next 75 years. That mandate, enacted during the Bush-era (2006), requires this to be done in ten years.

That's right – the USPS is required by law (not by its labor unions) to contribute over $5 billion annually to pay for the future health benefits of carriers and employees that have yet to be hired.
The National Association of Letter Carriers is aware of this, which is why we have been working hard to get Congress to relieve the Postal Service of this unreasonable and unfair burden. No other company in the private or public sector is required to do this so neither should the Postal Service. We have also worked with the Postal Service to find win-win solutions to all the challenges that we face now and in the future. We are looking for new ways to utilize the world's best Postal network and delivery fleet. Our members have helped identify additional sources of revenue and we have jointly worked with the Postal Service to adjust letter carriers' routes to reflect current mail volume.

Over the past 10 years while the Postal Service loss 14 percent of its mail volume; it has also cut its workforce by nearly 25 percent. That means postal employees have been more efficient while delivering mail to every American home six days a week. We understand that working together we can avoid cuts in service that would eventually lead to the end of the USPS. As letter carriers we also realize there are many who still rely on the Postal Service as a primary source of communication. Recent polls that suggest Saturday deliveries would not be missed are misleading. In this age of instant technology there still exist a great "digital divide."

The fact remains that everyone does not pay their bills online or even have access to the internet. Those who live in rural communities, low-income areas, and the elderly would be impacted the most by the slower delivery time that would result from just one less day of mail service. The Postal Service is still very relevant and for only 44 cent a stamp we don't require a dime of your tax dollar! If it was not for the congressional mandate to pre-fund our retirement, the Postal Service would have seen profits of over a half a billion dollars over the past five years. Right now the United States Postal Service does not need to close post offices, reduce services or a bailout -- we just need Congress to fix the law that is breaking your Postal Service.

If it wasn't for the Sportsbooks sending me three NFL ATS books a day from Florida, the Post Office would have been out of business years ago. My mailman looks like he's dying every August.

I really don't know what to make of this?

Ebay is one of the biggest empires around... they recommend USPS on every shipping transaction. You can even buy postage right from ebay or paypal. It's pretty simple... self explanatory... Um.... how in the hell are they losing money??? There's some mismanagement somehwere.... So which a$$ho#$ is getting paid a 200k salary a year for sitting on his a$$ everyday??? I want to know.

And I don't believe in this BS about many people paying their bills online... my parents still pay all of their bills using stamps etc. They don't even know how to use the internet...

I could really could not care any less if the USPS went to 2 day/week Mail. Mondays and Thursdays. It really doesn't affect my life that much either way. I can't think of something I've ever received that had to get to me the day I got it. And maybe only a few things that absolutely had to go out on the day I sent it and that was only because I was being a procrastinator.

Bottom line the government is horribly inefficient and they're running our country into the ground.
