First things to do when moving to the US

    Right SBR,

I am moving to the US in a couple of months' time. As I am sure that I will have plenty of free time initially (due to lack of friends, buhu) I need some tips of what to do. What I've got down so far is:

    * Go to a gun range (always wanted to do this)
    * Sample loads of microbrewery beers
    * Watch an NFL game live (seen MLB, NBA and NHL)
    * Visit Vegas (at some point)

I am quite sure you guys can give me a ton of other examples of must-do's. What would the first thing you would do be?

    I am moving to Minnesota.

Thanks for the advice everyone. License/social security number and credit will be on my list. As well as getting a gun (legally of course).

Any chains of restaurants that one has to visit? (more or less only been to McDonald's, Burger King and KFC).

Where are you coming from? Get yourself a gun or 2 w. some ammo.
You gonna love Wendy's, Long John Silver, Perkins and Dairy Queen (milkshakes, ice cream) . There's plenty of Buffet's including some good Chinese ones where you can all eat for way under $10. Make sure to always leave a good tip.

Lived in minneapolis area for about 13yrs, great area in the summer, check out the resturaunts around the lake minnetoka area. and also the Uptown area of downtown minneapolis has great resturaunts and nightlife. Once September comes be prepared with warm clothes though!

If baseball is still in season when you get there, the new Twins stadium is a year old and one of the most amazing places in the country to watch a game now. Vikings tickets should be easy to come by this season also

Living in Northern Ireland at the moment, originally from Sweden.

Yeah, I've already checked out the gun laws and I am getting a hunting license from Alaska online. I will be able to get something within 60 days. Thanks for the tips on the restaurants, definitely will check them out.

Cheers, sounds like great. Being Swedish I hope I will be able to handle the cold.

I've already visited Minneapolis but I hope that your advice will come useful. I will try to get to the Minnetoka area for a bite to eat whenever I get there!

get the Purple Rain & 1999 LPs?, buy all the Mary Tyler Moore and Rhoda DVDs you can find?, Look on ebay for a Laetner Timberwolves Jersey?, learn the lyrics to Favre's big hit "Pants on the Ground"? check around to see if there is a book about Bud Grant that you can find? -- but first go to an Irish Pub and drink some beer while reminiscing about the "good old days" -- please don't take it as a dis of Minneapolis but rather a light hearted take on the adage that the "good old days" are right now!

Hope you enjoy your time in the States, I am in Louisiana

I moved from the UK in 2008 to California

Things to do. You have most/all of them all ready

Build Credit - Takes a while to get a good score. My first car I brought here I could only get a crappy rate (12.9 but now have a 3.75%). Good use of CC's is important
    SSN - What a pain
Driving License. Also get used to the roads.
Get a gun - Was very simple process
Find a way to get your British sport
Weather was a shock for me. California is lot hotter than London. I arrived right in the middle of Summer. I was tempted just to turn around and go back home. But after forcing myself to go out in it I soon got used to it

Oh and get used to the idea that can NOT walk 5 minutes from your home and walk in to Ladbrokes!

And one I thing I did not expect was how my accent would effect the ladies. To bad I'm married

VPN = Virtual Proxy Network. I will be connecting to a server outside America before visiting my EU/Asian books. They will think that I am located in for example Sweden.

Northern Ireland is half good, half bad (hehe). Right now we are coming up to marching season so there is quite a bit of rioting going on. The gun laws are crazy, noone is allowed them. If you get caught you will be charged with terrorism crimes nine times out of ten because of the conflict.

Sounds like a good list. Getting a gun will be a priority, I've already looked into some of it. From what I gather I would be best getting a hunting license online (Alaska).

The accent? Haha, good stuff! I think I've gotten quite a bit of a northern irish one the last four years so who knows?

Dont actually think I will mind. Plus, I will have time to travel around. What city would you recommend to go to the first weekend I have off?
