I know they are more popular in other other countries. They even have the ac/heater stand alone combos.

I just bought an 8000 BTU one today and it cooled a 300 square foot room down just fine.

I have one in the office. It's fine for those places where you can't fit a window mounted one/don't want to. All things being equal the window mounted ones are superior.

They work alright. Its the venting them out the window that is a pain.

So what happens with these portable AC's. Where does the water go? On my window AC the water drips outside.

I've heard most of them are noisy or they don't cool correctly. Window units are definately the way to go.

Same here, when it fills up the A/C will just shut off. When I'm running it at max power thing won't even run thru an entire night of sleep. Noise level, and the fact that this thing actually takes up space in the corner of my room makes me regret ever dropping 400 for the stupid thing. Don't get me wrong, it works but just saying I will never get one again

Have a fan blow on you in bed. It'll probably be annoying at first, but just give a few days to let yourself get used to it.

I figured these things would be quieter than the window units. I guess not.

Shitty, so are window units. No substitute for central air if you live below the Mason Dixon.

Neighbor had one, didn't seem to work very well. But he was trying to cool a good size open area.

It takes up space and is not that portable because it has to be staged near a window for the hose to empty water outside.

I made one back in college out of copper pipe, plastic tubing, a fan, styrofoam cooler and a fish tank pump, no draining required.
