Just finished my taxes - that was fun as always

I am getting a refund, but considering how much I paid plus the interest on the house, I hope so.

The more I think about it I think a fair tax (fairtax.org I think) is the way to go.

The Fair Tax is the common sense way to go - but it will never happen because it's not in the interest of politicians. They get too much financial support from lobbyists (extortion money) by picking winners and selling tax law loopholes.

that is because if it makes sense, it probably does not represent the view of some special interest group that has congress' ear.

A fair tax, or even just something super-simplified (but not necessarily fair) is against the interests of quite a few people.

I would only lose about a half a percent of my business (some simple tax advising and return prep for select clients), but actual tax specialists, IRS drones, and corporate-franchise tax return people (H&R Block, etc.) would be HIT. And they don't want that.

So, there are several million people out there whose best interests lay in keeping the tax system as convoluted as possible.

I just did my taxes this weekend too. I'm automatically going to get audited as I have a charitable donation that is more than my income. I donated a piece of land to a church, and the appraisal came back very high. Fortunately, I will get to carry the charitable donation deduction over to the next years.

I am all for a fair tax.

Did you deduct the cost of the appraisal? That's deductible along with the value of the land.

Very nice to donate the land. Good luck with any audit that may occur - just another example of "No good deed goes unpunished".

I will deduct the appraisal on my 2011 taxes. I made the donation in December, but the appraisal didn't happen until February. I'm actually donating another $120K piece of property again this year.

too funny. i'm black and grew up in housing projects. my mom worked 2 jobs while my dad put himself through law school so we would never have to take govt assistance. they both said it was only meant for people who can't take care of themselves and if you can walk and talk you don't need a handout.

Good outlook on self reliance, but I gotta ask, aren't housing projects govt asst?? Sect 8 is under HUD correct? But either way, your dad has the right idea!

Took me 4 1/2 hours to do mine and when it was over I owed money. I always owe money every year. It's like I'm giving money to all those who get refunds. Money comes out my pocket and goes into theirs.

That's all America needs. More tax-exempt property in the hands of the churches.
