    Greatest Guitarist (Rock or Blues)

Who is the greatest guitarist alive today? My favorites are the following:

    1. Mark Knoffler (can play anything, rock, blues, country, classical)
    2. Albert Lee (most underrated player in the country)
    3. Buddy Guy (best no one knows about)
    4. Eric Clapton (legend in rock who branched out)

Who do you have that's better????

    Jimi Hendrix
    Eric Clapton
    Jimmy Page
    Stevie Ray Vaughan
    Buddy Guy
    Jeff Beck
    Jerry Garcia

Hard to say really who's the best, so many different styles. All the great guitarists are unique in their own way. Glad I've had the pleasure of meeting all these guys except for Hendrix.

I am sure glad people added Stevie Ray, Jimi and Carlos no top 10 would be complete without those. Clapton is always a given.

Tough call with so many hot hands playing throughout the years.
Four I like to hear play are Jimmy Page, Hank Jr.,Toy Caldwell and Robbie Robertson.
But theres so many good ones.

Mark Tremonti is one of my fav guitarist. However, Herman Li is amazing. There is a reason Through the Fire and Flames is the hardest song on guitar hero.

If hendrix isn't on top of your list you need to get your head examined.

Hey people...he asked who was the greatest guitarist ALIVE today. Obviously Hendrix would probably be #1 or #2 on everyone's list.

mikejamm mentioned stevie ray, I think everyone has heard of him though. Nice for people to find out about guitarists where they havent heard their playing. stevie ray is without a doubt one of the greatest.

Good taste on SBR. I'll place votes with Eric Johnson and Jeff Beck - very talented. And I'll throw in some lesser known gods of prog rock / jazz fusion. YouTube any of these names to get a lesson in shredding.

    Jake Cinninger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ed_0MwtAsU)
    Greg Howe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edVbz_uXJd0)
    Frank Gambale (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxiNBKIHTek)
    Steve Morse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juHYD...eature=related)
    Allan Holdsworth
    Frank Zappa

This is probably my greatest post ever at SBR

This. For as bad as his pop music is, Mayer is prob a top 5 guitarist right now (looking at what they can currently do, not career-wise). Would probably be more openly considered as the greatest alive if it wasn't for the image he created for himself as a musician for teenage girls.
