For your first book get "Getting Started In Holdem" by Ed Miller, fastest way to get a solid foundation if you're new. You can probably get it for $10 and read it in a day.
You can also look into videos from coaching websites like Card Runners, which has a good series called Poker Made Simple by Ed Miller which is pretty good for vets and newbies. You'll get more out of that series after you have some playing time under your belt but it's a good series even if you're new to poker. That site was geared more towards higher stakes and players with some experience but that series I remember when I was just getting serious about poker and I got a lot from it.

Ginder school is the only site I've seen with low stakes videos. I read that dueces cracked has good low stakes videos but I haven't joined there so just going by what I read.

I'd start with the the book I mentioned then start playing some hands. Then decide which way you want to learn, videos or books and you'll be able to find what you need. Another good resource is 2+2 beginners poker forum, lots of good advice there check out the stickies on top of the forum.

These posts are all great, and no doubt your learning curve should start with a nice healthy upwards trajectory.

My advice is to be introspective as much as you can, as in my experience my character flaws correlated directly to my game flawsimpatience, emotional, overly impulsive).
Without turning this into a shrink session, you'll find poker, especially Texas Holden NL will teach you slot about life if you have an open mind.
    More to come...,

Just register @ Full Tilt and Poker Stars and use the play money they give you. They let you reload at any time, free of charge.

You can read all the books and watch all the cash games/tournaments on TV you want, but nothing will make you better than personal experience.

Exactly, you can read as much as you want but you will gain the most knowledge from playing for real and developing your own style of play. Like someone else said, you can play here in the tournaments and only lose points. Better to just lose points here than to lose money elsewhere. Good Luck

I would start with "harrington on hold'em", there are a lot of books out there, but to echo everyone else you just need to play, lose a little money and figure it out. The lessons will come much quicker if you lose money, free play games are fun and a good way to see a lot of hands, but they don't do that great of a job showing you actually plays that people will make.

Read books, lose money, and good luck!

My advice is to play freerolls and join a poker forum or two.Play in Private Games... Learn by playing.Read topics on Forum that the other payers post and learn from them.Once you win a few bucks in Freerolls and private forum games.Move on to some small buy ins maby try a small sng and see how you do.

IMO .. You can read all the books you want but its the experiance you gain from playing that will help you the most.

Super System is the poker bible for Poker Players it wont be good for you unless you have a good poker base harrington on holdem is great but again its more valuble to a bit more of an expereanced player as well as its far more effective for touni. style play there are a lot of good poker 101 books but playing is the best way to get the feel i would shy away from play money as you will learn less about poker and more about craps in those games freerolls are a bit better but still a bit off the best way to learn is with real money but unfortunatly it is likely more expencive. you get what you pay for PS it would be a good idea to keep track of your cash flow as well as any important hands you play for analizing later. i hope this helps. good luck playing evryone other than me.
