    Poker in vegas

I have never played poker in Vegas. Please let me know what the "rake" or the vig is in any particular game.

I went out to play poker with my dad at his local game. It is held at a card room in FL... store front type place that hosts bridge, and poker a couple nights a week. It's a business. I suspect the house is taking 40-50% of the cash before payouts. No way in hell anybody has a chance of winning there.

So I was wondering how much a vegas casino takes.

Maga, "rake" is a great discussion topic. You'd have to ask some of the Vegas poker-regs, but I think the standard rule listed on the table is: "10% of pot, capped at $4 per hand."

If you play bigger games, I'm sure the $4 cap moves up to $5, $10 etc.

Big thing on rake is that it impacts the SMALLER games more. Take 2/4 Limit, for example. The pots are pretty small, so 10% is applied often. Watch how much the payout is whittled down. I do think it's virtually impossible to clear a profit on these smaller games.

As you move up in games, the rake can be a smaller % of pot. I think that makes for a more "beatable" game.

NOt sure where u came up w/ 40-50% figure, but that's wrong. One other thing to think about, re: rake. If you play a big heads-up pot...almost half of that $$ is YOURS. So, a $60 pot might be $25 invested by you.

Once you figure out rake + tip, very tough to beat the smaller games.

By Nevada law the rake for a cash game will be listed on a plaque next to the dealer. Usually it will be 10% of the pot up to a max. of either $4 or $5. Many rooms also take a "jackpot drop" where $1 is taken out of the pot once it has $10 in it. Jackpot drop money is used for things like bad beat jackpots/high hand jackpts. If the table becomes short handed players can request a rake reduction, and if granted the house will lower the rake until the table becomes full again.

Bigger games will take "time" instead of rake, meaning every half hour the players will each give the dealer a set amount of money ($6 for smaller big games, $25 for nosebleed stakes) and the house will take no money out of the pot.

The plaque should list the rake down to 6 handed so shouldnt be a need to request reduction. The dealer will handle the drop.

And time rake is getting more popular ime. Anything above 200NL has been timed my last few trips out to poker Mecca.

Good thread. A lot of poker players don't understand rake, I don't think even Doyle Brunson could beat a 2/4 limit game long term. I personally hate the promo drops, but if you only play during the "high hand" times and other crap, you can basically take advantage of money that was paid by other players that played at non-promo times.
