    Breaking Bookies

Playing the Victorian Poker Championships at Crown Melbourne this week.

Any comments about my weight will receive an infraction. ;-) (or possibly make me cry) Went to see a doctor last week as been feeling so bad for a while and he tells me I've put on 40lbs since january, my cholesterol is in stroke risk range and my blood pressure is through the roof.

Welcome to your 50s Opti. Always been able to eat and exercise as I like and weight didnt change. I guess those days are over. :\

BTW, the Aussie Millions is on in Melbourne in January 2018. At the same time as the Australian Tennis Open. I will be there.

Anyone who wants to make the trip down under let me know and if enough interest I'll arrange something cool for us.

I just want to know where are the acid wash jeans?

Glad you are enjoying yourself...now go out and make some money.

Wish I could make it out in January, but already have a trip planned to Vegas SB weekend. With work the way it is, no way I can do two trips. I promise at some point I’ll make it out there.

good luck at the poker championships

regarding your health and weight, I did see a photo of a burger, poutine and beer a few days ago...you might need to change that to a chicken breast and a salad...the report from the doctor does not sound good, hopefully you will be making some positive changes going forward.

And i m in the same boat with my health, and doing a bit of cardio work on a stationary bike while playing poker on the big screen tv will definitely help.
The problem is always the good food and wine.

Hey Opti, get yourself healthy and don't worry about people with negative opinions.

You are one of the most pleasant, genuine and generous people I have had the pleasure to meet. Keep happy, healthy and kick ass at the poker tables man!

    Hey Opti!
Always nice to a put face with the name. Good luck at the tables bro and like Sinmiedo and a few others have said, "a bit of cardio work on a stationary bike," is a great start. We sit at these tables for such long periods of time, it's not good for our leg circulation at all. Even just taking a good walk around the casino area during breaks. Do you have one of those activity apps on your phone? The kind that counts your steps? We should be walking 2 miles a day or 5000 steps. Up and down a couple of flights of steps is excellent too.

A change in diet is definitely the positive solution for high
cholesterol. I stay on lean proteins, chicken, fish, turkey, no fried or processed food, leafy green vegetables or any other ones like carrots, broccoli, yellow squash, and zucchini lightly saute'ed in olive oil.

Thy to avoid heavy white flour breads and starches. Whole grains, wheat, and whole oats will raise you HDL levels (good cholesterol)

These changes work mate, I now maintain a slim 180 lbs, my LDL (bad cholesterol), is less that 100mg and very low risk of stroke and normal BP, all of it through some minor lifestyle changes.

Take what your doc says seriously Opti, because it definitely is. The good thing is, it's really simple to get control of, start slow and don't try to make changes all at once. Best of luck to ya mate.

I bet the rest of the forum doesn't get what a bunch of nice guys we have in this section.

Not one person took a shot at me (and I kind of think I deserve it)

@Jake... I got a bit of a shock this time. Especially the weight. That's over 300lbs you see there. *eek* Not going to be able to stay happy and live on salad and seeds, but once back home I plan to seriously eat healthier and drink less between now and New Year and reassess then.

Honestly not at all afraid of dieing. But don't want to have a horrible final few years (as my father did) or be a burden on my kids due to stupid controllable health issues around weight.

Re the Breaking Bookies shirt. When walking into casino it was weird how many people looked at me to read the shirt, and when I sat at first table a guy asked where he could buy one and another said it was a cool shirt. Kudos to SBR. Did a good job with that breaking bad IP

Played 4 tournies so far this week. Opening event, Teams event, Deepstack event that I min-cashed in, and a Freezeout event where I think I was the first person eliminated. Have a 6 Max event on today.

Need a decent win in one of the last 3 I have planned so I can justify staying longer to play the Main Event next weekend.

Have to say, whatever happens, I really really enjoy these festivals with a week of daily bigger tournies. Really hope i can get good enough to afford to keep doing it. (on the verge of being there but still have work to do)

There is another festival in Sydney in November, then the WSOP tour in Sydney in December and Aussie millions in January. Will sit down and decide if I really can do this after those. If so, I want to spend 2018 traveling the world playing poker. Manila, Macau, Monaco, London, Berlin, Vegas.

There is the Asian Poker Tour finals on in Noumea (kind of close to Australia) in a couple of weeks too. If I have a big win this week, will treat myself and act like a big timer and go and play that too.

Can anyone tell that I am kind of excited about this?

Here's my stats so far. Counting since 20th June when we I played the Rio Daily Deepstack in Vegas with our poker mixer group. Thats when I truly got the bug and decided to get serious and try to learn enough to go back next year and play a bunch of bracelet events. So I have 52 weeks to get good enough and am trying to maximize my learning/experience every week where I can.

    Weeks: 17 of 52
    Tournies played: 38
    Avg entries: 184
    Avg Buyin: $235
    Avg 1st prize: $9448

    Avg Finish: 18.5
    Final Tables: 17
    Cashes: 10
    Avg Cash: $819
    Biggest Cash: $3840

    Total Winnings: $8188
    Total Buyins: $8923
    Running total: -$735

I've spent another $1800 on 3 trips to Melbourne (by far the best place for poker in Australia is why I travel from Sydney for it) as well, so overall I am around $2500 down so far.

But my average result is keeping me encouraged. I've bubbled for a couple of larger prizes and get close so often it's starting to get a tiny bit frustrating but I am sure I will break through soon and that wont matter any more.

Thanks for letting me share. I feel kind of alone on this journey and you guys are part of what keeps me enthusiastic and confident and wanting to keep working at it.

Your travel plans sound awesome next year. If you do make Vegas, let us know ahead of time. I’m sure several us can make it out there.

    Good luck and keep grinding.

well you are basically even except for travel costs and have gained a lot of live tournament experience and had a lot of fun whilst doing it, that's a win in my book! I'm happy to see that you are having a great time and so passionate about playing poker.

about your health, you carry your weight quite well and I would not have guessed that you are over 300 lbs but what the doctor said is quite concerning. Hopefully you will listen to what he said and start tweeking your diet a little to incorporate more healthy proteins, fruit and veg. Also trying to do some type of exercise a couple times at least a couple of times a week. Maybe start out by simply going on a walk in the morning or evening and then after some time ramp things up with cardio and really get a good solid sweat going.

I have probably gained 10 pounds since the Vegas trip and I have been exercising semi regularly. I have been eating a lot of junk though and need to start eating a little cleaner myself. It is difficult to eat clean and sustain it because it takes a lot more effort.

Great read Opti! Continue to keep us updated mate! Like mpas said, a lot of us would love to be out there, especially great locales like Melbourne and Sydney! Crown Melbourne looks pretty frigg'in sweet! Your stats definitely reflect your patience and ability to hang around late in tourneys, it's gonna happen for you Opti. Jake is spot on too, passionate about poker. Keep it go'in bro!

Well that was a reality check.

Ended up staying 8 nights and playing 11 tournies. Which was 4 more than planned.

I only made 2 min cashes, zero final tables. Average field was 158 and my average result was 35th this time.

My (over) confidence saw me enter two 6 Max events at $1100 and $550 I knew was a bad idea when planning the trip. And followed that up with 2 x $250 satties and a $500 one, when I had said to myself don't waste any money on satellites this time. So that was $2700 more then planned.

Overall spent $4500 on buyins for just two min cashes for $1200 in prizes, leaving me -$3300. Adding on $1400 for flights and hotel, that's a $4700 body blow to my poker bankroll. (which started at 10k max I allowed myself).

Still committed to the international man of poker plan, but might have to re-assess and downgrade the path a little to match the bankroll better now.

WSOP Sydney and Aussie Millions looking a bit above my means right now but will drop it down a level stakes wise and stop spending on travel for tournies until I get the roll back up a bit.

Oh well, have to take the bad weeks in stride if I want to do this long term so might just look at it as another lesson learned along the way.

Thanks mate. And I'll definitely be losing that weight and getting healthier as a priority.

Funnily enough the discipline of daily poker grinding is good for my health. I weighed myself today and lost 5kg over the 9 days since I saw the doctor. Thats almost 12lbs. I think about 20-25kg more is a good first target.

I have to sleep regular hours to fit in my work and the poker. I eat normal size meals at normal times instead of just snacking (gorging) when hungry, don't drink alcohol when playing or smoke at all and only feel like 1 or 2 beers with dinner after the day is done. And I wake up every day feeling so positive and happy when doing it my son keeps commenting on it and strangers around me even notice it sometimes.

I haven't had a goal or interest like this in a decade. And honestly it does not feel at all like a gambling habit or anything negative. More like an olympic dream sort of thing.

I might share one hand I played.

Feel free to be critical, as the bloke I beat in the hand couldn't stop telling me I played it badly for the next 5 or hands afterward he was so tilted about it.

This was in a $500 satellite for a main event seat. 3k start stacks and I think 10 min blind levels so it was important to get stacked up fairly early before the blinds started to force things by about level 4.

It was just into level 2 with 50/100 blinds and a 25 ante.

I was dealt A9 spades in SB.

    Villian was on the button.

8 at table and all but one limped in before Villain bets 350

I called, BB called and everyone else folded. There was a bit under 2k in the pot.

Flop came Q94 rainbow with 1 spade.

I check, BB checks and Villain thinks for way too long and then bets 900. with maybe 3 or 4 k left behind

I'd put him on a pocket pair pre flop. And whilst waiting so long had decided it might be Jacks or 10s and if showed any weakness with bet size I was going to snap call all-in with about 2800 left behind. Which I did.

BB folded and Villian tanked again for ages. Staring at me like an asshole and just looking generally pissed off at the decision.

He eventually said show me your penetrating queen and slammed a pair of 10s down on the table.

I have trouble lying at the table and give off loads of natural tells so kind of have a strategy where I just tell the truth with a big grin and look straight in their eyes and leave them to try and read that. I think it confuses people quite well and is definitely better them me trying to lie or show no emotion. Just can't do that well. Yet.

Anyway, so I reply that I can't, and don't show my cards.

This sends the guy on immediate tilt (wasnt my intention but hey, its still good) and he kind of angrily says you had the queen didnt you? I said nothing.

So he goes off on a rant that I if i played that better I would have got more chips. I just said, yeah I'm just an amateur. But your wrong, I would not have won any chips if I played it differently, with a huge shit eatin grin on my face.

He then said "I'm a MTT expert. Online I am SomeWankyNick , and you need to learn how to play". (no word of a lie!)

I asked if he could recommend a book.

A minute or two later he is back at me to admit I had a queen, so I broke down and told him I had A9 suited.

    He says, you're lying!

I said ok and went back to playing.

Another hand later he said it again and another guy at the table said to me "for gods sake just tell him you had a queen"

He then said to the Villian that he believes me about the A9 but agreed it was a bad play.

Sooooo.... was I just a lucky donk there or was that a good play?

Except your latest bad run ,you are good Opti. If you can keep next 6 months of poker on regular basis, with min losses that would be great, you could be winning top spots sometime soon.
Regarding your nit so good condition, you should walk some 5km at least 4 mornings a week,on empty stomack(fasted),only drink water or lemonade or green tea before walk.

Hey Opti, keep perspective, one tourney series does not make a full picture. Take a couple of days, think through what you did right and wrong.

    Cheers and Good Luck!!!

Regarding the hand you note. I fail to see what you did wrong. You bluffed and won. So what? That happens all the time in poker, that is kinda the point, dont play the cards, play the person and situation. A bad play is when you lose value or fail to properly tell the story of the hand that you want them to think. This depends on who you are telling that story to. If they miss it, then sometimes you lose, sometimes you win. Know your opponents and know your situation... It sounds like you knew both and played it to win. Sounds like an overall good play to me...

After thinking about it more I decided that I would do the same again in that spot. Guy was heavily advertising he didn't have the Q beaten, or was way over doing hollywooding to trap. I was still better than a 4/1 shot to improve my hand if he did call, it was a big pot, I felt like I had very strong chance of a fold using the snap allin against this tanker, and it was a turbo that I needed to chip up in or have no chance anyway.

I see why it can look like that too.

I wonder if you wouldn't call it super advanced play if you saw a pro do it on TV though?

Not saying I think that. But I do need to work out if the times I choose an unorthodox move are really more donk or pro. I don't want to fall into the habit of playing every hand "the right way" as it's easy to see at least 50% of the fields I have been playing against pretty much play that way and are definitely not a big part of the 10% of players that have been beating me regularly.
