That can also be called having a replaceable bankroll (sponsorships, other investments, etc.) I contend that very few of these poker superstars make money off poker. The talent pool is too even up there.

Your topic reminds me of Archie Karas who played in the WSOP like 2 years ago and they had a brief story about him. http://ezinearticles.com/?Beat-the-C...as?&id=2635880 ... I don't think Ivey can ever go completely broke. Just like how Stu Ungar went broke from horse races and such there was always someone there who knew that he had talent and staked him for tournaments and such. Stu had a drug problem also which from what I know Ivey doesn't but hey who knows? ... in the end he will never end up like ** Hammer

I doubt he will ever be broke. He may lose a lot and not have what he has now. He will always have at least a couple million at the least.

Gambling won't ruin this guy but everything he us surrounded by might. He has proven he can risk a lot and walk away with a good amount of money. Let's just hope all of the other things you can get involved in Vegas doesn't hit him

I doubt it. Ivey has a major stake in Full Tilt Poker. I believe him and Ferguson are co-founders.

I read in the ESPN magazine that he had a manager who takes care of his finances. It might be a long term friend of his which can lead to implications but I think he'll still be doing alright in a few years time. As said earlier, he will always have a backer and Full Tilt Poker would be a nice little side earner for him.

There is a very small percentage.. miniscule actually.. of compulsive gamblers who actually win. Ivey is in that elite group, where he needs constant action. I'm actually not even sure if we can classify him as a true compulsive gambler.

Sure he needs action, but if you see how controlled he is at the poker table, than you would think it's controlled compulsion. He rarely makes bad moves at the poker table, and is known as one of the best poker players in the world. Craps and prop bets he drops cash in.

The guy must be worth something like 50 minimum. He made $7 million off online poker cash games last year alone. Add in tournament wins, and live cash games, and I'm sure he could pull in $10 million a year easy.

His compulsive gambling might be something like a few million a year, but lucky for him, he makes so much more.

on a side note, i always wanted to see a reality show based on the wives of big gamblers. how they handle the swings. ivey could definatly be the poster boy for it.

    He'll be alright.

If he does go broke, he can always get a job on a poker BB as a paid poster.

i agree with brent crude, i would be surprised if most of what he predicts doesnt come true. sooner rather than later, based on the behavior i see. i cant believe the numbers thrown around in the thread. without the income from full tilt i am sure he already would have gone bust just like most of these poker super stars. i remember when he was into chip and doyle back when he first got popular and they let him into "the game".

Yeah he's probably doing a little better than most on this board. As said before I think he will be ok. Also the E60 report was probably intended to have some shock value for the viewers painting him in the light that now has people talking.

We do hear stories of alot of the pro poker players losing all their prize money to sports betting and on the tables though. If Ivey has a smart manager behind him, he will be set for life.

2 words. FULL TILT. His share is worth 100's of millions. I think he'll be alright. The M.C Hammer comparison is laughable.

I speculate big sports betting syndicates in Vegas use poker players like Ivey and others to get down huge amounts on games in Vegas casinos. They would make the perfect beard. But who's to say they aren't?

Ivey's share in Fulltilt is not worth "100's of millions". Its worth between 37.5 and 45 million.

He owns 5% of fulltilt.com, he made 7mill alone last year from online cash games and I'm sure he is up in live cash games on the year. There is no way in hell he goes busto, even if he did get broke and had to go slum it playing 25-50 live/online, you think he can't pull 10k a week out.Do you think if wrote a book it wouldn't be a bestseller? Do you think fulltilt is going out of business?

I read that article too. Author says he's "speculating". Maybe too much exaggeration on my part. But anybody who can forget they have 750k stashed at a casino isn't going broke anytime soon imo.

I read something somewhere he is worth more like 300 million.

Clonie Gowen tried to sue Full Tilt for 40 million for her 1% she was supposed to have. She said she thinks Full Tilt is worth 4 BILLION.

I thought I read somewhere once Phil Ivey is like 10-20% owner of FT.
Cant recall where I read that, so I might be wrong.
So if he owns 5% thats still 200 million if Clonie is right.

And his net worth is WAYYYY more than 30 million by the way.....And 4 billion is probably a friendly low-ball estimate from Clonie (Who is a meth-smoking slob by the way).....And she will not be gettin a nicklel in that lawsuit she has.
