"Poker is not a card game..." a different way to look at poker.

I need to vent a little...

So the purpose for this post is that last night at a friends home game, I said the following and everyone looked at me perplexed, than eventually disagreed or didn't understand despite the fact I play cards for a living. I play at Commerce, come on in sit at my table if you are a disbeliever...

Is poker really a card game? You can make an easy case for it being one, but I certainly don't always look at it as such.

When ever I try to explain how to win at poker to friends, I quote the great Dan Harrington "...first thing you have to realize is that poker isn't a card game, its a wagering game, and the cards facilitate the wagering." Don't agree with this? Fine, this is my rationale which also could be looked at as a game of bankroll management.

The house will always win at table games due to the advantage built in. A roulette table may lose the house 30k in one night, but the casino isn't worried because by years end that 2 - 5% house edge will show a nice profit. Poker and sports betting is the same, get your money in with the advantage and by years end, you'll show a profit. Easy enough to understand and I'm sure most already look it that way.

But I think the misunderstanding was that I look at the buy in the same way. If I sit at a Baccarat table with $100 I'm going to make $10 bets. Therefore, I look at a poker buy-in as one bet. So If I'm going to sit at a $100 table, I need at least $1000 in my wallet or 10 bets and at least $10,000 or a hundred bets ready to go sitting at home. I'm looking to get it all-in with the advantage and win a bet, I lose then oh well, I got nine more bullets. Even seasoned fellow degenerates don't agree with me on this as I'm often asked why I don't play the 5/10 $1500 game. When I say I need at least $15,000 in my pocket and $150,000 (10 days worth) put aside in my bank account to even consider sitting there, they look at me like I'm crazy.

In the end, Poker is a game and its very rarely as easy as just getting it all in. You still have to learn to play cards and make the right moves. But having this mentality keeps me from going on tilt and preserves my bankroll which is by far the most important part of playing winning poker. And thats what I was attempting to explain as how it is that I win at poker by having this mentality thats its not a card game.

I thought it was easy enough to understand, am I nuts or something?

Love it man. I would be a top class player if i knew how to manage my bankroll better. I usually win in a couple sessions then go out and buy really expensive shit, then end up having a losing sessions and then I am forced to replenish my bankroll.

somewhat intelligent from the OP. i dont think he needs to be rolled quite that deep to play 5-10 with a 1500 buy in, but his safer approach is better then clowns who have 2k to their name and think they can play it.

Would going all in on 28 offsuit UTG be a intelligent move?
