It's a double edged sword. Touchbacks will jump but on side kick recoveries will be closer to the end zone than before.

The team that kicks the onside kick is the one who needs to score points. So if the other team recovers it the game will be over regardless of the yard line they recover it.

Of course the totals will go down. The average fan has NO IDEA how important field position is and how important it is to how a game plays out. Field position is HUGE.

The team that will benefit the most is the Giants. If this rule was implemented last year they might have won 2 more games. Their kickoffs would routinely be to the 10 yardline and with slow backup linebackers the other teams would start games at the 35 yard line regularly. There's a big difference to starting a drive at the 20 and starting at the 35 or better.

It makes no difference for the runner who successfully breaks through the defense. The five yards is basically added on to the end of his run, when he's already in the clear. Will there be fewer of those? Yes.
