Did you catch the commercial talking about how NCAA players "aren't a bunch of dumb jocks"? Of course they tried to manipulate the statistics to prove a point that wasn't there. They showed pictures of a bunch of football, basketball, track guys and came out with 2 misleading statistics.

1. NCAA athletes score higher than regular college students on SAT's and ACT's
2 Black male Athletes are 10% more likely to graduate than non black male college athletes
Then they say "see, we're not just a bunch of dumb jocks".


1. Higher SAT Test scores: NCAA Athletes aren't just football/basketball players, NCAA athletes include the golf team, tennis team, crew, swim team, Lacrosse for both men and WOMEN. It would include Harvard all the way down to turnpike Tech. First of all the WOMEN athletes would bump up the SAT averages along with the"dorky"sports. To show a picture of some basketball player and say " we get higher test scores than regular students" is deceptive.


2. First of all what sports do black male athletes play? Golf? No. Tennis? No. Crew? No. Swimming? Hell no. Hockey? No. Lacrosse? No. Baseball? No. They mostly play football, basketball, and track? Have you seen what for example the football players ( white and black) major in at SEC schools? They invented bogus majors just for football players that don't even exist in other colleges. There's literally a major out there for tree planting. There's nothing academic about it. You thought communications or psychology were joke majors but they make this look like rocket science. To top it off most of these football players have tutors and people doing the term papers for them! I know, I played football. It's a joke. So you want to tell me the Tennessee Defensive secondary is 10% more likely to graduate than Joe Public Black student but Joe Public black student isn't majoring in tree planting and he doesn't have tutors to do the work for him.

That commercial really bothered me as do a lot of things with the NCAA. Like letting Bruce Pearl coach, the BCS, and all the other crap. They air the commercial during the basketball game and say we're smarter than the regular students and we're more likely to graduate! In all reality 25% of an accounting degree is still better than 100% of a tree planting degree with tutors and all.

If you look at cross country running, golf, swimming, and other non revenue generating sports this is true. Look at most football and basketball players and their next career move is either a bouncer or making your big mac. Anyone remember Jim Herrick's test for a class his players all signed up for?

That's exactly my point. Their statistic is using ALL Atheltes ( Womens tennis, womens golf, Mens Harvard Golf team) to skew and push up SAT and ACT scores.

They are also using joke majors and tutors at SEC schools to push up the "black athletes are 10% more likely to graduate than regular black students) statistic. The average suburban black kid in college isn't majoring in tree planting and he doesn't have tutors to do his term paper for him.

Yet the silly NCAA commercial kept airing during basketball games and they kept showing basketball and football players in their pictures. That's 100% not true of the people they were showing and it's deceptive statistics. Nobody looks at womens tennis players and calls them dumb jocks. You have to compare apples to apples in statistics and that's not what they were doing.

That's how you get past stat #2, but what about stat #1?

It's got to be because...
- There really are a lot of sports that make "athletes". Golf, tennis, crew count just as much as FB and BB.
- 50% womens sports push up the averages
- Not every school has a football team, football certainly pushes the averages down

So to throw a commercial on at halftime of a mens basketball or football game and say we are smarter and we graduate at a higher rate is so misleading it's laughable. Post the graduation rates, majors and SAT scores of top football and basketball programs and your first instinct was the correct one.

I'll disagree.

A player in a varsity sport (or drama, or debate, or any other activity that sucks up a lot of time) has 2 benefits. They learn to manage time, especially during the sport's active season. Second, most athletes do less drugs/drinking than non-athletes. They learn healthy lifestyles. These 2 benefits translate directly into better academics, and higher graduation rates. The first point is from experience and observation. The second is from studies I read in the past.
