Fine but that does not mean that those conclusions are correct.
You could start drilling more in the gulf and in Alaska and barely dent your dependence on imports.

The US has about 1.5 percent of world reserves and consumes nearly 18 percent of oil produced. You can't circle that square.

This is what neocons don't understand. Numbers. They have no idea what you have just said. Maybe if you state it like this they will understand. If you drill everywhere in the US and pump all the oil you can you are still going to produce enough oil for only 4 states. All other 46 states will have to import based on current consumption.

Half of the oil consumed by the US is drilled here... where does that 4 state figure come in? Most of the rest comes from Canada and Mexico

And neocons? Lol do you realize what a small percentage of conservatives fit that description?

Never voted in my life.. Know better than waste my time..

Republicans have more common sense but don't think realistically..

Democrats have priorities all screwed up, think stopping smoking in bars is more important than stopping people from crossing borders...

    All politicians are crooks..

The oil companies found an excuse to increase it and blame it on "Mid-East turmoil."

Come on guys, you should know by now that the oil barons are well aware we will pay ANYTHING for gas and oil and do nothing about it but bitch or blame it on politicians.

We could go the way of Europe and finally install a railway system that allows you to travel to major cities without driving. Would be awesome for sporting events.

Correct. Public transport is virtually non-existent in the US. And if there is any, it's nothing like what there is in Europe.

Gas/petrol in the UK is heavily taxed and currently costs £1.29 per litre ($9.50 per gallon).
People still drive and probably still would if that was doubled.

Oil companies cannot control (or even influence) the exchange price of crude oil except by reducing output.

Incorrect. The oil companies can control production and guess what happens when they aren't producing as much as people are demanding? Claiming they can't influence [and even have some control over] oil prices is just flat out wrong.

I said "except by reducing ouput" (or production if you prefer).
The problem with using that as an explanation is that output is at an all time high.

Actually, some organizations have stated Peak Oil has already been reached. The International Energy Agency is probably the most prominent organization that has stated this [Back in 06 I believe].

Compare the size of western Europe to America, and also the distances between big cities of each. America is MUCH more spread out than Europe, and high speed trains would be just another government money-pit, like Amtrak

Are we discounting the War Ships headed to Israel?
Saw it on MSNBC this morning, and verified it through FOX, is that not happening?
Instability among countries that we have "deals" with is bad for futures........ well if you are a consumer...... not so much if you are a speculator, or oil man.

I think there is a lot of suppressed info on actual #'s , we are obviously not getting the whole story (or refuse to believe it) , as more wars are fought over dead dinosaurs than anything else on or in Earth.

Actual production continues to increase and is estimated to continue to do so until around 2015.

The IEA study you refer to relates to production per capita meaning that the rate of increase started to fall behind worldwide population growth in 2006.
