Today fans were permanently denied access to WorldStarHiphop.com. The site has been seized by Homeland Security.

This is not the first time WorldStarHipHop has come under attack. Last year, the site was sued by 50 Cent for unauthorized usage of his image which he claimed overused his likeliness so much that fans thought it was his website.

Several other popular Hip Hop sites known for their file-sharing capabilities were also shut down for similar reasons, such as OnSmash.com and RapGodFathers.com. Last year, fans were greeted with a message that stated, "This domain name has been seized by ICE - Homeland Security Investigations."

The massive attack on internet content control can be attributed to a censorship bill passed by Congress last November called the Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA). The bill empowers the government to take action against websites offering unauthorized copyrighted or counterfeit content. The bill was unanimously passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee and allows the Attorney General to seize and shut down websites suspected of "wrongdoing."

It's no secret the music industry has been up in arms over content control via the internet so it's no surprise that file-sharing sites are being targeted by this new law. What is a surprise are the specific attacks on websites that focus their content on Hip Hop.
    Why?

According to Recording Artist Guild (RAG) CEO Byron Booker Hip Hop is the No.1 downloaded peer-to-peer music on the internet worldwide. "Artists like Lil Wayne, Drake and Eminem are downloaded more than double the amount of artists from other genres. RAG's mission is to promote and protect the interest of recording artists so we are encouraged by this bill so long as it doesn't infringe upon the First Amendment".

While music organizations like RAG represent the artist, other music monopolies seem to have a more capitalistic agenda. Whether it was suing college students or mom-and-pop internet companies, they have not been able to control the massive surge of queries, searches and demand that stems from the user. Ultimately, the bill acts as the corporations' digital bounty hunters waiting to collect on any suspect put on the internet music content bulls eye’s list.

This is a tuff call for me. On the one hand, anything which tends to stop the spread of insipid hip hop or rap has to be ok with me. I hate that *&%# to quote and agree with Bruce Willis.

On the other, I hate big brother more than I do rap.

Government is there to protect the big companies and not the consumer. Big companies pay tons of money to elect the people in the Congress.
