It all started when the oddsmakers wanted to poke a stick at us. They think anyone who thinks they can analyze a matchup and gain an edge on a point spread must be "handicapped".

        Just looked at wiki:

The term handicap derives from hand-in-cap, a popular 17th-century lottery game, where players placed their bets in a cap.

So a guy that is handicapped that gambles on sports can also be called a handicapped handicapper.

Some people think that it means if you don't pay your local on Tuesday, you will be handicapped.

Are you guys handicapped? A handicap is the pointspread. When the lakers are -5 they are handicapped 5 points to start the game. Someone who thus handiacapps is one who attributes a handiacapp or pointspread to a specific matchup.

In horse racing, horses were strapped with various amounts of weight to try and mythically create a dead heat for all involved. The horses would range in amounts of weight carried from say 127 pounds down to 107 pounds. These races were called handicap races.
The people assigning the weights and afterwards , the people betting the race were called handicappers.
Same premise as the other poster wrote about point spreads.

the terms means someone who is efficient at picking winners at originally horseracing then as time went on it was used for other games but primarly sporting events . It origins came from the dirt poor Irish in Ireland. From what I understand the original term was a mans name- andy cap it changed to handi capper. Thats as much as I know the info came from someone called the blind pig a local he could estimate furs by touching he was blind. That was a name of a guy that was like todays vegas linemakers
