Werth contract startling even for baseball

By TIM DAHLBERG Even those who don't follow baseball closely had to notice, if only because the figures were so startling. Jayson Werth is a decent enough

I heard no other team was even close to 100 mil so they over paid by at least $30-45 million.

Just a guess, but I think they rushed this a little (and thus overpaid) in reaction to Dunn leaving. Believe it or not, Dunn was the fan favorite and said to be the face of the franchise, and with Strasburg hurt and Harper not with the big club, the Nats needed to do something to generate interest. Of course they talk they have generated is the wrong kind thanks to this deal.

This contract still baffles me. Nothing against Werth really; we should all be so lucky as to be vastly overpaid, so I can't fault the guy for taking the deal in that regard. But this also places a ton of extra pressure on him than if he'd gone for, say, a 5-year, $80 million contract somewhere else. Only have to think back to Mike Hampton and the over-the-top contract the Rockies gave him. Hampton was always a head case anyway, but that huge contract no doubt put extra pressure on him to be the true Colorado ace.

Also will be interesting to see this Bryce Harper kid get some spring at bats. That might initially take some pressure off Werth with a lot of early focus on the No. 1 pick. But eventually, Werth has to produce. Anything less than a .280-.290 batting average, 28-30 homers and 100 RBI, and he'll be seen as a failure, another free agent who didn't live up to his end of the bargain.
