(old thread from 2007)How many of you would join a Sports Players Association?

The Poker Players Alliance claims almost 800,000 members.

How come sports players can never get their act together? Sure, there are a lot more poker players, but shouldn't the sports people be able to put together 20,000? It just seems like any time we try to do something, we are lucky to get 50 people involved.

Not to get this thread off topic to start but the PPA #'s are somewhat meaningless:

I joined the PPA because Party Poker gave me a $50 cash bonus if I did and donated $50 to the PPA.

Later though once UIGEA had passed

PokerStars ran $50,000 freerolls people could enter once and it said on the message:
By joining this tournament you are becoming a member of the poker players alliance, do you agree: Yes or No button.

I mean if sportsbooks gave everyone who joined a $50 free bet I'm sure they could get 800,000 members too.

With that said I would join just about anything pro gambling to add a # to the sign up count but I'd be the type who was extremely passionate about promoting it to others if it had a real backbone and was not just some money making Gimmick as the PPA appears to be.

A couple of groups have tip toed in and tried to start something. The real problem is there is no one who can afford to wear a bullseye. JC you stepped up once upon a time only to get an unfair trial and nearly two years in the can.

So I don't think its a problem getting players to join but as of now there is nothing to join.

What about having the Vegas casinos/sportsbooks themselves start something - or the sporting consultants hired to make the lines - like LVSC? They should have a bit of money to start something on behalf of the Vegas book's having some type of online presence?

Unfortunately, I think we are living a pipe dream if we think main stream americana will ever allow sportsbetting into the mainstream. Too many opponents - Feds, The sports leagues themselves (I am thinking the NFL, NBA, MLB are the REAL powers behind stopping legalization of on-line betting), moral and religious groups....., and any effort to legalize, regulate and tax on-line books would be ruthlessly assassinated by all of those groups.

Small time, responsible sports gamblers will always be on the fringes, and it seems like on-line books are a nice way to feed an enjoyable habit - for now. Many of us cannot afford multiple trips to Vegas, and after getting a taste of a decent on-line book, I am hooked to making on-line sports bets. I never used a bookie before, and never will. I hate casino games, but like poker, and I guess if it were all taken away, I would survive, but man I LOVE to bet on sports!

I was thinking of something similar to this. Has there been any US advocacy group we can take part in?? I feel like if poker passes soon, there may be some room for ideas such as these.

No one wants to be a target. You're basically admitted to doing something illegal (unless you reside and gamble strictly in Vegas or outside of USA). I'm not putting my name on a list and letting it be known that I illegally transfer funds offshore, don't claim gambling earnings, etc.

    Nice try, but no thanks.

If the Poker people get their way then you will see more advances for the guys to have sports gaming in the future. I can easily see it happening.

Poker was the catalyst for attacking online gaming. Without it and maybe BOS going public, I think it's 2006 again.

I don't get what you mean bill. Are you saying poker will bring more problems for sports betting if it poker passes?

Lots of good PPA has done. All the major poker rooms are gone from the US. US online pro's have to leave or play live. PPA has an F rating.

Worst case scenario Sports Betting in the US will head back to the future. Call bets with a pin number. US Sports betting at the offshore books will never be dead. Politicians in the US are morons.

Not to mention Vegas doesn't want you sending their money to Costa Rica. No way they would get behind anything promoting offshore sports gaming.
