UCLA had an awesome team that year. Behind Ed (and Charles) O'Bannon, Bruins took the title. Had to get the buzzer-beater vs Missouri in 2nd round.
Thats right didn't tynes Edny or Cam'ron dollar make a big shot in that come from behind game

Yes, Capone. Mizzou took the lead on a nice play. Only 4.8 sec left.

Tyus Edney coast-to-coast. Very nice. Note how Norm had the two big Haley brothers on the bench.

I didn't get it. If shot is going to the rim, would have been much tougher over two big guys (other than Grimm):

    Capone:

*A few more Majerus stories, if you like this stuff.

1976: Majerus thought that Marquette team was better than the edition that won the title a year later (in 1977). And the statistics bear that out.

Remember, smaller field back then. 32 teams, the committee didn't compromise the geography too often. West-coast teams would stay west, etc. Sometimes, they'd ship a team to break up the glut from one conference. But the seedings weren't parsed like they are now.

Marquette entered that tournament with only ONE loss. Marquette was ranked #2 in the final AP poll. But they lined up in the region with the undefeated Indiana team (who beat MARQ in the regional final).

1977: Marquette had seven losses. They win the region. Win a choppy semifinal vs NC-Charlotte (with Cornbread Maxwell). Whitehead makes the disputed game-winner at the buzzer. Was it Basket Interference?

Majerus has said that Marquette was out-manned for the final game. North Carolina had Dudley Bradley, Phil Ford, Walter Davis, Tom LaGarde, and a young Mike O'Koren. But the Heels had accumulated injuries by the time of the title game. They weren't firing on all cylinders by that time.

Marquette plays a perfect first half. Majerus hated playing zone, which is something he picked up from McGuire. Exception was that they'd zone against the in-bounds. McGuire liked the look of the zone against the in-bounds...and he stuck with the effective zone for the remainder of the game. Warriors win the title in 1977.

Lol at John Thompson. You have to f#cking kidding.
Thompson picked a team that couldn't shoot in the 1998 Olympics and got embarrassed and had to settle for a bronze medal. He literally had no clue and that team could not make an outside shot to save their lives.

I personally would have gone with Calhoun before Thompson, but then again I'm a Connecticut homer.

Nashy, Calhoun was good. I sometimes forget how much success Calhoun had with different players.

The UConn title over Duke was a good one. Most vivid UConn memory I have was:
*Tate George beating Clemson at the horn.
*Two days later, Laettner flips the script and knocks out UConn at the buzzer.
...Tell me Life doesn't have a sick sense of humor.

Majeurs was a smart basketball mind I wouldn't disagree what he said about Marquette.
Not sure you remember the game Gary Payton the glove of Oregon State taking the distance like tynus eddy to win the game in I think the 2nd round in the tournament

Capone, there were some great buzzer-beaters back then. But I don't remember the Gary Payton shot.

How about US Reed vs Lousville?

I think this is the game you're referencing. 1990 BallSt/OregSt. BallSt scores on a very late bucket:

Young Wayne Larrivee on the call. Looks like Payton fouled out.
