Why Charger going for 4 down but not kick a field goal in order to onside kick?

Regardless the outcome 4 down if they fail, why they don’t kick a field goal and then onside kick ?Even though the 4down is touchdown I don’t really like this strategy.I guess if this game is playoff game or Super Bowl,I guarantee they won’t go 4down and kick a field goal and then onside kick, can anyone explain why regular game do but not playoff? If they kick 3 first I might keep my parly alive.

Yeah better to win less than take the risk on a backdoor cover. IMO.

If the spread had been 7.5, they kick.

They never used to do that kind of stuff and maybe they finally realized how stupid it is. Touchdown is the way to go. Again only in the last few years did they start kicking a field goal late and then try it on side kick. History has shown it's always been a touchdown 1st and that is the proper call

Given time on clock and timeout situation also field position, I think TD was the right call.

Better odds of scoring a FG after an onside kick vs a TD from 45 yards out with <1min and 1 timeout

If it was 4th down outside the 10 yard line then they kick

    Let me guesstimate:
4th and goal from the 6th = 40% (maybe less)
TD from the 45 in just over a minute = 25%
FG from the 45 in just over a minute = 50%

I'd say kicking is very slightly the better call, but it's close. Those are 3 variables to play with.

Keep in mind that the Chargers' coach isn't laying the points, he's taking them.

I really don't think the Chargers coach is betting on the game. But he surely knows plenty of their fans are and he surely know the spread. If it's a close call, why not go for the cover.

Good stuff. 40%+ probably all I need.

I take the 4 downs and go for the TD in that situation. Need 2 scores anyway. Even with an onside kick recovery there’s no guarantee you get that close again and most likely need a few shots downfield and a long 50/50 FG to tie. I wonder what this looked like in the Seattle/Denver game. Thanks for sharing.

Actually common sense. They wouldn’t have likely gotten that close even if they got an onside kick recovery. They would have been in a terrible position had they kicked a fg got the onside and then needed a td.

They were to close to the end zone that's why they went for it on 4th down. Would have been to hard to get all the way down the field again with that little amount of time left. It was the right call.

The TD after the onside has got to be less and the FG has got to be higher. This is a good analysis otherwise. Off chance they can win before OT once they got the td though as well.
