Bengals head coach brain fart in OT

Could have let the clock run down for a tie but punted quickly giving Pitt time for the winning drive.

This was maybe the greatest coaching brain fart in NFL history!

    ^ Probably so JJ..

All I know is that Bengals Coach went full retard at the end of that game. You play for the tie at that point and not for the loss. Mind blowing!

Even coaches who make the Super Bowl are mostly bad.

Kyle Shanahan is putrid. In the first quarter, he challenges a 4-yard catch on first down for Chicago at the Bears 25-yard-line. He won the challenge, but just a dumb move to waste a challenge that early on a 4-yard catch on first down.

Matt Ruhle is another idiot and should be fired ASAP. Down 2, Panthers break a huge play to the Browns 15. The Browns defense was gassed. He then runs 3 times into the line and kicks a FG, leaving them time to come back down and match the FG for a win. He should have played aggressive and at least tried to score a TD to ensure a victory.

100% cost them the tie. Punted with 18 seconds left on the play clock which allowed Pitt the extra time they needed to get into field goal range. There is no excuse for coaches not to be able to count to 20, but it happens all the time.

If they had an Italian-American coach he would have went for the tie.

Exactly. I don't understand why NFL teams don't hire a time management coach upstairs? If they did already he brain farted also not signaling down. Complete Bengals Coaching team time management fail never the less..

I counted 20 seconds the Bengals Coaching staff handed Pitt in a gift basket at the end of the game in OT with less then a minute showing on the clock at the time of the punt with no timeouts.

The game would have ended in a tie for sure if you don't give Pitt those 20 seconds unless they deliver a hail marry throw which was very unlikely.

Jets tried that with Herm Edwards. If a team gets to that point with a coach, it's hopeless. Taylor has made a ton of blunders his first 3 years in the league. It's not hard to run the clock down there and know what's going on. Just incredible.

First week in and already a ton of mind boggling coaching decisons. Even the guy in Miami trying to score on NE up 20-7 with 50 seconds left, rolling Tua out and throwing a pass across the middle of the field.

    i dunno

    Colts coach is pretty BRUTAL

when he goes for it 4th and goal outside of the 1 yard line it's a clown show

doesn't know when to use his timeouts

bengals win if they just protect the PAT from getting tipped

Yep, I couldn't believe what I was seeing? How do you not milk clock there? That is a horrible gaff that I hope comes to bite them in the ass at the end of the season. At least Lovie played for the tie in Houston when he realized they couldn't win. These coaches make too much money and too much is on the line for making stupid clock management errors. Hire some guys from Harvard to figure things out for you.

How bout they get rid of the stupid fukkin rule that the fumbler has to be the guy to recover fumble to advance the ball. Where does that shit come from?

Could become a strategy to "fumble" the ball forward (backward pitches are already legal) towards a teamate right before you get tackled.

Could you imagine a team marching down the field on one play like it's rugby?

You could set up devastating plays with specialist personnel. Of course, the ball is still football shaped...lol... but you get what I'm saying.

Okay, but Burrow clearly fumbled. Obviously a judgment has to be made.

As for the coach's brain fart, I cannot speak, bc after calling the fumble recovery back due to dumb rule, I switched off the television and headed out.

How about not challenging the would be Chase TD late in the 4th? An obvious TD but they hurried up to try and do a run play for no apparent reason. They ended up getting stuffed and not scoring on the drive.

The Holy Roller play, Oakland vs. San Diego, 1970s. Led to the rule change. Pretty amazing finish.

Reich is terrible, yet outside of Indianapolis, nobody seems to mention it.

In the final 25 seconds of the OT, Lovie Smith punted on 4th and 3 from midfield to take the tie. You could see Reich dumbfounded by the decision. He clearly expected Smith to go, fail, and the Colts would get the ball at midfield with 20 seconds left. Because Reich did the same thing a couple years ago and lost the game that same way.

    yup... i remember it clearly

also remember him passing on 3 points early in a road game vs Jags couple seasons ago in a 1st half defensive struggle...

lost momentum. ended up losing the game in a very low scoring game.

he doesn't LEARN from his mistakes. So they need to move on from him and the kicker.

On September 10, 1978, Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler, ahem, fumbled the ball on the last play of regulation in a game against the Chargers.

Raiders players, ahem, muffed the ball into the end zone, where the they fell on it for a winning touchdown as the clock hit zero.

Later, Stabler said that he had intentionally fumbled the ball forward to keep the last, desperate play alive. In the off-season, the NFL changed the rules so that on fourth down, or in the last two minutes of a half, only the fumbling player can recover a fumble, advance and keep the yardage. If another offensive player recovers the fumble, they still keep it, but the officials return the ball to the spot of the fumble.

CBS' Ian Eagle on Bengals' OT punt: 'Not sure why they're giving Pittsburgh more time'

Clock management late in overtime might not have won Sunday's season opener for the Cincinnati Bengals against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

But it might have prevented a loss.

The Bengals' Kevin Huber punted the ball with about 1:03 remaining in OT, with about 14 seconds remaining on the play clock.

"Not sure why they're giving Pittsburgh more time. They should have taken that down to a final second," CBS play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle said during the broadcast. "At this point if you're Cincinnati, the goal is just to not lose the game."

CBS in-studio analyst Bill Cowher, former head coach of the Steelers, also questioned the Bengals' clock management on the punt
