The entire lineup of USFL jerseys. I still can’t believe they went with the ones they did. People will buy jerseys if they look clean. They missed the ball big time in that league.

Some originations use focus groups, you know like opinion researchers whose jobs are not sports related in any way, their jobs are to gather opinions of fans of the team or sport, and ask a slew of different opinion questions such as "what colors do you find 'cool' would you like to see the players wear" or "what types of patterns..." then the opinion researchers gather all the data, write their reports, and present the findings to different teams.

The hard core baseball fan like me, or Jake, and others, we're going to watch regardless, we aren't the ones being polled, same with the NHL puck heads, or the NFL junkie, we're not the targets here.

Leagues and teams want to know what would hook in the female audience, or children.

I have a niece who has said this many times, "I like that team, I like their colors..."
So my 12 year old niece will watch football with us because the team colors caught her eye, and now she's interested.
The game did not get her attention, but the color of the uniforms did.

That and the fact merchandise sells, the more options a fan has at the sports apparel store the better chance they're buying something.

The only jersey that grew on me.... Oregon Ducks football team.... when they released that new bright yellow jersey. I thought that was so odd at first.... but it's pretty cool. It fits them.
