The definition of gambling:
To take risky action in the hope of a desired result.

You walk up to the roulette wheel.
There's always a risk of losing, and you can win only by luck.
The last winning number has absolutely no effect on what the next winning number will be.
Random numbers are just that, random.

Betting however, can be coordinated in a way to minimize risk, while winning through data driven strategies.

Sports betting can be modeled and treated like a business, something which can't be done with gambling.

Sports bettors, the successful one spend a lot of time studying and researching historical data to create strategies.

Gambling, like my example on roulette is a game of chance purely built on personal desire to win.

Gamblers rely on luck.
Bettors make sure they have an edge.

That's the difference.

Gambling = relies on pure dumb luck and games of chance (i.e. roulette, black jack, craps, slot machines, casino, etc.)

Betting = make an educated guess and wager prediction based on info, stats, data, etc. to predict the outcome of an event

I can watch just about any baseball game, or most any other sport if it's compelling enough without skin in the game.

If I spot something that looks off, I'll bet it but only after I research it out.

Only time I'll bet a hunch, and that's rare, is on a pony.

I get it. But just cause you have it all figured out, all angles considered doesn't guarantee you a win. "Betting" on the bounce of a ball is a losing proposition unless you have an edge. I'd even say, with all due respect, most guys who claim they have an edge are down lifetime so....it's better just not to gamble/bet.

Or just spot bet what you can afford and have some fun...just my 2 cents

My dad, who knew a thing or two about a thing or two, was a great NY Yankees fan.
He told me a story about how Whitey Ford once closed down a NYC bar at 4am on a Saturday night/Sunday morning, on the same day he was scheduled to make a 1pm Sunday start.

Whitey left the bar snotted, ha-ha-ha-hammered.

Word leaked out Ford was pitching on two hours sleep, half drunk, and fully hungover, and the Yanks were heavily favored, as they usually were in the early 60's.

Public who heard that started fading Ford, bet the Senators as a nice doggy.

Ford proceeded to toss a two hit shutout.

Moral of the story, all that glimmers is not gold.

The books are masters of psychological mind games. When you’re certain you found an edge they either make it blatantly too good to be true and you shy away, or know that you know and bait you with the soothing odds that supports your theory...only to be a loss.

as many have said before the bets you feel worst about are usually going to be the easier wins.
