If the horse isn't hurt I don't get this at all. The owners have already hit the jackpot with a derby win regardless of what happens in upcoming races. I don't see them getting much more $ from stud fees if they only win the belmont, but by winning the triple crown they could hit the jackpot again. Strange.

Maybe he is still biting the face of the other horse that tried to coral him at the end of the race.

They're not running him because they know that without a ridiculously fast pace, he has no chance. They'll probably find a reason to skip the Belmont.

Should be a requirement that any horse that wins the Derby must run the Preakness. With the obvious exception being any sort of Barbaro type of situations.

Barbaro. What a sad story. Owners tried everything to save him. I really thought he would pull through.

I don't think Country House ran again after winning. I had Country House got lucky that Maximum Security got a DQ.

Kind of thought this would happen. Owners cashing in on his stud fees at his highest point.
What is kind of hypocritical though is the trainer saying he almost gave up on the sport because of how delusional he was with all the other owners and trainers but yet now agrees to not run the horse in the next race so that everyone involved can make more money.
People are always so righteous when they are poor but then when they get a taste of the money their true hypocritical nature comes out. A good person can stand up for what they believe in the face of cash and still make the same decision. This guy is a schmuck

Good for the connections looking out for the best interest of the horse. Smart move taking the time to get ready for the Belmont.

Didn’t 20 of his horses die in a fire which was why he wanted to give up the business?

Yes but he also said he wanted to give up because he was disenchanted with horse racing which was probably because he was always losing. It just would have been nice to see them run the horse and not just hold the horse out because of stud fees. Or dont give a speech about how much you were unhappy with the racing scene just because you werent making any money.

Yes, 1 of Trainer Reed's 3 barns burnt up in a fire. I think he lost like 23 horses.

Excruciating. Yes, knocked him for a loop, understandably.

The owner talked about this after the Derby. Horse was a strict 5-week recovery cycle. Pletcher has followed a similar schedule. Maybe 3 races in 5 weeks is too tight a window.

Are you guys insane? The horse was second to last at the distance the Preakness is run compared to the Kentucky Derby.

How is he going to win the Preakness? If it comes last it will lose from his glory!

Think before you post if you don't understand horse racing.

    1. Who cares? At that point the triple crown opportunity is gone.
    2. He would be running the Preakness if his owners believed in him.

they probably did the smart thing considering a lot of that win had to do with the pace of the race..you certainly have to at least acknowledge that he's passing up a chance at the triple crown..think he would've went off around 6-1 in the preakness if he had run..they'll have a fresh horse for the belmont..they know the horse and probably made the right call

Belmont will be easier to win. Preakness is a crapshoot. Anyone remember Barbaro? Had to be put down after Preakness because the owners run it without rest.

I think the Triple Crown has run its course. It was a useful until maybe the late 90s.It was great but now we have Breeders Cup and So on.But i guess it will never go away because of money.I think if your are to continue with this i think the races shoud be spread apart like 1st week of may Kd then 1st Week of June Preakness then Belmont 1st week of July.

Preakness favors speed, Belmont gives a horse a better chance to close, Rich Strike (is a closer) has a better shot to do well in the Belmont and he will be fresher coming into it.

    Preakness always Chalk City
That Horse would still be a Long-Shot
    He would have no shot
    Belmont different story
