One of my favorite games at the Mirage was the video poker with the double down feature at the sports book bar. That was the best hotel on the strip for a while. High class hookers trolling the bars. Was awesome. If they could bring back the old Hard Rock vibe at that property that would be awesome. Loved both of those hotels back in the day.

I remember the Mirage carpet back when the hotel was respectable. Some tropical fruity design.

What a hole in the wall dump that was.
It was kind of cool though, no resort, no rooms, just a casino and bars.

I think they were Hilton money.
Didn't they shut down about ten years ago and become part of the Linq?

    Pretty much.
I can place a wager in my office at home sitting in my boxer shorts these days, with better vig than Vegas too.

Damn, I gotta rewatch that classic. I remembered playing craps and being drunk at 8am right near the front door. Crazy thing was that the table was packed. And everyone would try to holla at the hot ladies walking by. I can't remember exactly but I swear it was like $3 table or something really low. Great times.

Vegas Vacation was a Chevy Chase classic, and I was not a big fan of his.

I played more hours of poker in there than I can count. 10/20 limit hold 'em in the top section was my office from when I moved to Vegas until Wynn opened. Tom Vu was a reg. up there. It sucked/was hilarious when a tourist would go on a heater, rack up, and head immediately from the cage to the circle bar across the rail as soon as he won enough money to rent one of the hookers.

Years later they had a nice 2/5 game where one of the fat guys from Boyz 2 Men would seek attention from fanboys and throw his money away going all-in blind.

The poker room had this giant, Gauguin inspired mural of an island village populated exclusively with topless women. That got covered up around 2005, but it's probably still lurking beneath some paneling. It was so ridiculous that it deserves to be preserved somewhere.

The Hard Rock in Vegas I always felt was low class and poorly run. The Mirage was getting worn out by the time I left Vegas and I'm sure it's even worse now, but I can't imagine turning it into a strip version of the old Hard Rock will be an improvement.

There’s a little casino/bar within Linq called “O’Sheas” but it’s not the same.

Old Hard Rock was poorly run… it wasn’t a hotel/casino though, it was a brothel.

When the Mirage opened up they had a Sportsbook. Jimmy Vaccaro ran it. No one was ever looser with taking big bets than him. Stuie Unger was in there all the time. And you can parlay Over first half with game. (If you were a bit generous after).

Might have to stop by and say goodbye to the Mirage when I go out there in April. Lotta memories in that place. My first sports bet ever. The pool was great. The chocolate chip muffins at the Roasted Bean.

    Danny Gans.

I got stuck in the elevator by myself at the Mirage about 15 years ago.

The Mirage had the best smell back in the day. Some kind of awesome tropical smell that you could still feel hints of when you were in the cab heading back to the airport.

This was the pre-2009 Vegas before all the BS club and corporate stuff started, with those "whatever happens in Vegas" ads BS

Going to casino royale for $1 Michelob or O'Sheas just because was always fun, you had 3 other casinos on that side that you could go to and just pop in for a few drinks or some fun

Vegas has pretty much sucked since the early 2010s.

D Gans and T Fator, among the rest

I was always at that end of the strip. Now it's a corporate behemoth with barely even 3 books taking different bets/lines.

Pre 2009 was the best. I had a blast from 2004-2007. City Center, although made the skyline modern was the beginning of the end of that era. 2010’s pretty much solidified all corporate on the strip.

Circus Circus? OMG, that has to be the worst casino if you are single? You will never, ever pick up a girl at Circus Circle. You have a better chance of stepping on a Tonka Toy. I did use to love Slots a Fun next door. That's where I first learned how to play crap when I was like 14 years old. They had a loooong hard crap table that you could get amazing dice action. They had nickle craps. Great way to learn crap odds were betting a nickle.

The old Sahara was the rage in those days. They had the best steakhouse on the West coast. I was a big baller there, they'd put me up in some unreally large suites. It was damn near impossible NOT to pick up 1, 2 dare I say 3 women a night there.
Haha, any time I think of Slots a Fun, I go one further to the Westward Ho Used to go to the ca-fae daily, if not twice, for lunch and maybe dinner. Think lunch was $3, and dinner was $5. At some point they had $1 footlongs and $1 strawberry daquiris, but if ya got the non-alcoholic strawberry daquiri it was like $10

I enjoyed that small section of the strip quite a bit, even Stardust

Man, I can't even count how many footlongs I ate at the Ho. Haha. Early morning breakfast there or the Stardust or Sahara. I'd grab popcorn for lunch from the Ho, slotsafun or the old Peppermill casino. I LOVED fresh hot popcorn. I racked up a lot of foot miles walking that side of the strip.

Sounds like they will rebrand the current Mirage Hotel into a Hard Rock, then they will scrape the front side (volcano area) and make it into a guitar. They will also have to do something with the dolphin habitat/tiger area. A REIT owns the actual dirt/building and they are purchasing the operations from MGM (clientele/right to operate on that dirt)… I don’t know if clientele would shift from one property to the other because people are loyal to the brand, not the location. Honestly- like the idea of the guitar building on strip for the skyline but is Hard Rock a relevant brand to younger people or got old fukks? Will be interesting to see how it plays out. I don’t think the Mirage has shitty bones as a building but you never know. The way MGM redid Monte Carlo is outstanding. PARK MGM top end.

That’s funny… my first vegas trip was in December 2001 and I came back in May 2002 en route to Los Angeles for my summer internship. Stopped here for 3 days, stayed at Circus Circus and lived off $1 footlongs and $1 Heinekens at Slots A Fun. Can’t do either today. Belt buster. Didn’t have a pot to piss in but I damn sure could buy a pretty lady a $1 Heineken and I did.

    Oh for sure.

Back in the 90's when I still I had a full set of hair fresh out pf college I used to love the dive spots.
I've had several dollar beers at O'Sheas, Vegas started going downhill when Stardust went bye-bye if you ask me.

I was here for the implosion. Stardust one of my favorite places. It was a great spot until the end. Spent a lot of time in that sportsbook with some old locals. Should have spent less time drinking and more time learning.

I saw UNLV dismantle Duke from my room (get this) in the back of the 'Dust in their Motor Lodge'
That by far is my greatest party Vegas style.

my mother used to like staying there because it was cheaper to get airfare/westward ho than just the airfare!

stayed once with her and that was enough... rooms could be so freaking far back!

did love the cheap eats though

love the stories guys, vegas is truly the best place on earth and has been for decades
