This fit is gonna be fascinating to watch unfold for his three year tenure. He’ll probably get a natty in year 2 then when he goes 9-3 in year 3 he’ll be shoved out because they can’t stand him

It is plain crazy. Suppose freeman would coach the team if they make the playoff? But Kelly sure likes to blow torch the ground when he leaves. When he quit Cincinnati for the Irish job, his team was 12-0 at the time

Once you are gone, you are gone. No point in hanging around. Just get it done with. It does not matter who coaches the games. The final product is in.

All of the SEC schools have the same problem now. They are all going to cheat at the same level. You hire a coach to recruit. Not coach. Florida just brought in Billy Napier to put in an Alabama and Clemson recruiting model. They are going to spend top dollar. Missouri is openly cheating. All of these schools are willing to pay up.

All you can do is keep trying to pay coaches more money but it never buys anything. They have all reached a dead end. They will all have their little runs but it will never be enough.

Do you really believe ND has a legitimate shot at winning a championship? They will get boat raced by whoever they play in the first round. Kelly is no idiot. He left Cinci the same way because he knew they were not beating Florida in that bowl game either. If he really thought ND had a shot, he wouldn't be leaving.

He has not been able to recruit the studs at ND. It just wasn't happening. He's done a great job coaching 3 star talent. I'm sure he's imagining what he could do with 4 and 5 star talent now. He's getting older. He may not ever have another opportunity like this one. The talent level at LSU compared to ND is very telling. I think he's going to do great.

A lot of people are rooting for ND and Freeman to get into the playoff now. It would be a great Cinderella story but I just don't see them winning 2 games to a title. They could win one game (although that's highly unlikely) out of pure adrenaline but 2 games? No chance. Kelly knew there was no way that Cinci team was beating that stacked UF team in Tebow's last game. They got beat by 4 TDs. Coaches know.

Any team that makes the final 4 has a shot. Why do teams even bother playing the games if the favorites always win? Tell that to Villanova when they beat Georgetown, NC St when they beat Houston, Patriots when they beat The Greatest Show on Turf etc etc.

There's a time and a place for everything and this was not the time. He could have waited until they were officially out of the running.

He can't wait because he has to start recruiting. They are hitting the ground running. He has a lot of time to make up. Whatever time he commits to Notre Dame is time taken from his future success at LSU. He is an LSU guy now.

He should've turned the job down then. He made a commitment to the team and abandoned them.

College football fans are hopeless romantics. This is the real world. The guy is getting paid $15 million per year potentially. It is not coming from Notre Dame. College football is business. It is not about playoffs. Playoffs are just part of the business.

I guess you forgot the last 3 times ND made the playoffs? Kelly knows that this team has ZERO chance of winning 1 game, let alone 2 games versus the likes of Georgia or Bama. Hell, he couldn't even beat Cinci, losing by double digits AT HOME.
You can't compare Villanova and NC State both winning when there was NO SHOT CLOCK in basketball. If you look back at that Patriots team, they have more HOFers than that Rams team. Plus 3 turnovers usually gets most teams beat. Of course anything is possible but the odds are very much not in ND favor to win not 1 but 2 games.

    ----------------------------------
Kelly's move from Notre Dame to LSU has to do with one thing: challenging for a national championship. More specifically, it has to do with improved recruiting. That may seem counterintuitive considering Kelly has seven seasons of 10 or more wins with the Fighting Irish, including five straight. They also have made the College Football Playoff twice, in 2018 and '20 and, before that, were a participant in the 2013 BCS championship game.

But the Fighting Irish were manhandled in each of those appearances, losing to Alabama (2012 and 2020) and Clemson (2018) by a combined score of 103-31 — an average margin of defeat of 24 points per game. They have not won the equivalent of a New Year's Day 6 bowl game since a 24-21 Cotton Bowl victory over Texas A&M on Jan. 1, 1994.

Moreover, Kelly is 1-8 against top-10 opponents since arriving at Notre Dame in 2010, and 3-10 against top-10 opponents.

Ed Orgeron made a commitment to LSU too. You see where that got him only 2 years removed from a national title. There is no such thing as commitment when it comes to employment and definitely not with CFB. Coaches and players get cut all the time. You just don't hear about the players. Florida is paying 3 head coaches right now from backing out of their so called commitments. There's 400+ athletes in the transfer portal right now. Commitment?? Really? This country has a 50%+ divorce rate. We don't even stay committed in marriages.

Michigan State is the new model. They went out and bought players. They even got guys that were not in the transfer portal.

It will be interesting to see if Freeman recruits better than Kelly did. My guess is that he will, he connects with the players and recruits very well.

The problem with staying for the playoffs is that if they did make it somehow, then he's going to lose a lot of recruiting time at lsu. This week wouldn't matter, but if he was stuck at notre dame or pulling double duty for the rest of the month, it would hurt LSU in the long run. The fact he was going to be replaced by freeman, who is already the DC, makes it more of a seamless transition anyways should they make it.

Kelly is going to find out soon that he has prepare team to win every week in SEC as there are no cupcakes on schedule like Notre Dame plays all year long.

LSU has fallen so far so fast in the SEC West that when 2022 begins they will be in the bottom 2. Brian Kelly will do good to get them out of the basement next year.

Kelly is a pretty good coach but the advantages they have had in the past are gone. Everybody is going to be buying players. It is a pro league.

It would be kind of awesome if ND wo the natty right after he leaves.

Why the f didn't he wait until after the season anyway? He should have told LSU to wait or pound sand. Quitting before end of season like that is lame anyway.

Exactly. The kids have a chip on their shoulder now and a lot of support. I don't think they will win it but that would be a pretty epic fukk you to Kelly.

Reminds me of the '89 Michigan basketball team. Fisher took over and won title.
