Jim Mora hired as UCONN football head coach

UConn has hired former UCLA and NFL coach Jim Mora to be its next football coach, athletic director David Benedict announced Thursday.
Mora and UConn have agreed to a five-year contract in which he will make $1.5 million in the first season and could earn another $200,000 in annual performance incentives. He will begin his head-coaching duties Nov. 28 after serving as an assistant coach for the rest of the 2021 season, which will allow him to recruit.
"This program is loaded with potential, and I look forward to getting to know the student-athletes on the team and am eager to get to work!" Mora said in a statement.
Mora, who is 59, last coached in 2017, his final season at UCLA. He went 46-30 with the Bruins before being fired in November 2017. ESPN hired Mora as a college football analyst in 2018.
UConn announced in September that Randy Edsall would step down as coach. Edsall went 6-32 in his second stint as Huskies coach after guiding the program to two Big East titles and a Fiesta Bowl appearance during his first run from 1999 to 2010. This season, the Huskies are 1-8, with their only win coming against Yale, an FCS team from the Ivy League.
"Jim is a proven winner, a man of integrity, and he possesses the experience and the energy to lead our football program back to success," Benedict said in a statement. "Jim is excited and undaunted by this challenge, and we both know that this program has great potential. I'm certain that, under Coach Mora's leadership, UConn football will once again realize that potential."
Mora spent the first 25 years of his coaching career in the NFL, including head-coaching stops with the Atlanta Falcons (2004-06) and Seattle Seahawks (2009). UConn will mark just his second stop as a college coach and his first in the Northeast.

He did pretty well at UCLA for a while. He's got a lot of energy and seemingly a decent recruiter. He will at least make them better. They will be a legit DI team at the least.

Mora's forgotten how to coach too. This is a money grab. In 4 years his record will be 8-52

They could have hired a HS coach and would have gotten the same results

It's an impossible job. If he wins 5 games, he'd be one of the best coaches in the country. You just have to hope he can keep you relevant enough to eventually get in a conference.

Why are they investing money in a dead football program?

Football makes money even if you have a bad program.

Just like the past 400 head coaches we've had.
I like the hire, he's an experienced football mind.
Randy Edsall should be not allowed anywhere near a football field ever again, that includes Pop Warner.

Mora will do a good job, thing is he won't make us relevant, we're not a football school, UConn has terrific baseball, hockey, and basketball programs. UConn has had only two relevant football seasons in the past quarter century.

23 out of the last 25 seasons has been horseshit.

UConn should be putting Mora’s contract and the football budget into the basketball program. It looks bad that the women’s program is the only national relevant sport in Storrs.

Don't sleep on the men's team this season.
We're loaded with talent, Hurley is a master recruiter.
Gaffney is a rock solid guard.
They're nationally ranked for a reason.

    We opened up against CCSU
We play an in state game every season against Central Connecticut.
OK, CCSU Is not a powerhouse, for a tiny school they can ball though.
Huskies emptied the bench and crushed them by 50.
Women are (yawn) second ranked in the nation.
Coach Geno is a god here.

I guess his phone wasn't ringing off the hook with offers.
Sometimes you take what is offered.
He's in a win/win situation, I mean he's taking over a program so shitty that nothing else could possibly go wrong.

It's a recruiting game more so now that ever.
There's a ton of HS talent here in the east and northeast.
NJ produces some massive linemen out of HS.
Pennsylvania is stacked every year with great HS football too.
Those kids are being recruited hard from pretty much all the better college programs in the east and northeast as long as it's not UConn.
Look at Pitt, nationally ranked now, a big reason for that is they're getting the best of the kids out of HS from the area.

I know Hurley is putting the basketball program back on the map again, a big reason for that is he's one of best recruiters in the game.
Kevin Ollie set back that program four years, that national championship team wasn't his, Mr. Calhoun recruited that class.

I don't know how much of a recruiter Mora is.
    Let's see.

I remember his dad well. Shot craps with the old man in Vegas. For 3 straight days he made the exact same bet every time. $100. On the pass line, $200. Odds. Caesars Palace.

They fact they got any kind of name there is decent. He gets them to 500ish he will have his pick of jobs, and one last shot. Kind of like how he’s getting a jump on recruiting by being an assistant. If he fails, he will be 60 something and his career will be over anyways. Football is where athletics make the most money, so it’s always important to try and win.
