Official College Football Playoff countdown thread....

First poll of 2021 comes out in about 90 mins at approx 7:10 pm eastern.

    1. Georgia
    2. Cincy
    3. Bama
    4. Oklahoma

    ??

This would match the AP and Coaches polls and seems very reasonable.

Mods: can you please add the word "Rankings" after the word "Playoff" in the thread title?

Hoping this can be our go-to thread the next 5 weeks :-)

its set up perfect for cincy a little less pressure this way. cincy win out and we're home free those other teams will lose. funny to see oklahoma 9-0 and ranked 8th looks like they didnt penalize oregon for losing to stanford 4th place ranking is bs

Cinci #2 is a joke. They could lose to any of the other top 10 teams by double digits.

The fact oklahoma is 8 means Cincinnati can’t complain about being 6. Both will be in if they win out anyways

Pretty much put OU's back to the wall. They have to win out to even have a chance.

Love how 'Bama gets a pass every year. Hoping for Auburn to beat them in the iron bowl and then Auburn to beat UGA in the sec champ game. Even so, UGA would still make it I think.

Buckeyes are set up nice if they beat the wolverines and sparty.

    Not necessarily.

If bana goes 12-1 beating georgia to win sec then they are in with Georgia.

Mich state or ohio state or Michigan are going to go.

    Oregon is right there.

Cincy SOS is gona kill them.

OU had better beat baylor and ok state by a lot.

Texas was ranked 21 when OU beat them.

Cincy and OU struggled to win multiple times as big favorites.

That's why they were penalized even as undefeated teams.

    The eyeball test.

Each year the committee is a little different.

This committee has 6 of the 13 members brand new.

They value head to head and MOV a lot

Now that I know this I'll be very strong each week predicting the top teams because they've shown us what they value.

Bama has like maybe three tough games on their schedule; only need to win 2 of them, I guess. If Georgia was on their side of the bracket, you can bet your ass they would put a one loss, no Sec championship game Bama in the top 4.

99.9999999999999% guarantee that NO team with 2 losses makes the top 4 at end of the season.

No team w 2 losses has ever made the college football playoff.

Only time a 2 loss team made the BCS was LSU 2007.

maybe but Im not sure I mean cincy has had only 1 game this yr end in a 7 pt margin all others have been by much more. how is oregon ranked 4th all because of beating ohio st. in week 2? wut about the loss to stanford. how can u have a team ranked 4th in your 1st week playoff ranking that lost to a team that is 3-5 right now also on margin of victory oregon is 2-6 ats. their system or wutever theyre using is stupid because we know they have their own rankings which are always weak compared to power rankings so applying their weak rankings along with margin of victory and sos is futile because their team rankings are weak to begin with. oregon is around 15 in power rankings Ive seen not worried though they will lose qb cant even really throw so no way they win out

Oregon strength of sched and strength of record has to be much higher than cincy.

Also, cindy only beating navy by 7 then struggling to put away Tulane the past few weeks was really bad optics.

General question.... Do you guys think they rank teams based off their future schedule, as to let the games decide vs what schedule has already been played?

They are supposed to rank on current results and how they stack the teams, not future schedule ie what games remain.

Yeah, I know what they're supposed to do, but part of me can't help but feel they rank teams based off remaining schedule as to let the future results help sort out rankings.

If anything, they go too far back in the past, giving big names like Alabama a small break because they’re Alabama. They mentioned talking about “where a team came from”.

Mich state will be out soon.

    At Purdue
    V penn st
    At ohio state

Ohio beats then but had better beat Mich also. Otherwise u have a 3 way tie at top of big ten east then maybe highest ranking gets tiebreaker

    Mich St out soon?

    Can't they continue to surprise?

Bettors gave up on them, but they didn't give up.

On the other hand, that Mich game was huge and a let down is imminent, but not inevetible.

Those that surprise, continue to surprise, including barrelling through the let down spots.

That was their first game against a team who currently has a winning record.

I think they will get all they want at purdue and v penn state and I see them losing at ohio state.

I see Michigan v ohio state as the game that decides the B1G champ.

Mich state beat mich who might beat ohio state while might beat mich.

B1G cannot do h2h as tiebreaker on three 1 loss teams so it will likely go to highest ranked school ala 2008 Oklahoma v tex tech v texas where each all had just 1 loss.

Ohio state or Michigan wins big 10 east.

    Write it down mate !!

Rewarded for beating Michigan and most other games against the weak opponents, they've had a decent margin.

Also, if they can beat purdue, maryland and penn state to go undefeated into the ohio.state game, it will give the committee the chance to leap them up over Oregon after the buckeyes paste sparty.

See KVer my brother, there is method to this madness !!

Outside of GA, every squad has some discernable flaws so sparty right now is just among "the best of the rest".

Let's talk after the next 4 games. They'll be out of the top 4. Just watch.

It's crazy they even put out a playoff ranking this early.

They could just do it once at the end. When they take recent performance into account, which the do...they always liked teams that came on strong at the end of the season, then using that formula with 1/3 or so of the season left is a little misleading.

Because for that part of the formula, only the last few games really matter. Same can be said for schedule's effect (at least influence it), etc.

I've alwasy felt that the "if the season ended today" analysis was a little moot.

    Just my thoughts on it.
